I interviewed with a company about 3 weeks ago for an accounting position. They were very nice and sent me a letter saying they were impressed with me but had to hire the person with more experience. Well I got a call from them saying that the person they hired decided not to take the position and the job is mine if I want it. I said I would need to today to think about it and let them know tomorrow.
When I was in the interview they asked me how much I wanted to make and I think I low balled myself by a few thousand. I am going to call them back tomorrow and was wondering how I should handle it when they offer me the low estimate.

Thanks,

Tri

if it's too low, don't take it. if you'll work for peanuts then swallow your pride and do it, but i think you've closed the door on any fruitful negotiations by buying that whole "settling for you" routine and lowballing yourself. GL

I want to accept it but not for the salary I stated in the interview. I said I was looking for mid to upper 30's and I think I can get around 40k.

Average salary for someone fresh out of college with a BS in Accounting is around 40k.

Starting salaries are always negotiable. If they say "37k", then counter with something like, "I'm not sure that's going to work. I have a couple other companies who are in the process of offering me a position. If you can do 41k (or whatever), then I'll take it and not wait for the other offers."

Most likely, the worst that will happen is that they will say "No, 37k is set in stone." Then you need to decide if that's what you want. But most likely, they will counter with something between their original offer and your request.

Starting salaries are very important for the rest of your career. Most likely, raises are percentages. So, the higher you start off with, the higher you will be in several years from now compounded. (And if you are any decent at accounting, you don't need me to explain further. ;) )

Tell them this. While I was talking with other companies, they said the starting salary was XXX. Would you be able to be competitive?

They've already tried to ring you in at whatever you thought was the norm. Which they want you to undervalue your wages.

Just try to play the angle that you are talking with other companies for a similiar position, just a bit more money. Then try to play as if for a bit more you will prefer to work for them.

really, it depends on wether you want to wait or not.. if you turn them down, you may not get another offer for a couple months.. i know you've been looking for a few months now.. i'd take it, just so you have some income.. you can work there a few months, and then start looking again..

The time to do pay negotiations is DEFINITELY when they offer you the position. If you named a price in the interview, then forget that unless they bring it up. In every class and instructional video I've seen for interviewing they say to negotiate when it's offered. To me, it's unprofessional to ask you to name a price in the interview. They need you now or they'll be interviewing for another month to get someone else so you have an advantage, but don't burn bridges in the future for potential pay raises by demanding too much.

You should have told them that you got another offer and would have to think about your options. Do you have other options, this would help? If you don't, take it unless it is way too low.

When you interview with them later wait for them to start discussing salary. When they do then start negotiating.

This is a PERFECT way to word it. I would give them this statement almost verbatim.
