If any of you remember, 9 months ago my 1999 Acura Integra got stolen and I found it at a tow yard missing its bumpers, wheels, stereo etc. etc. The car was totaled and I ended up getting a Mazda 3.

Here is the thread...
http://forums.anandtech.com/messageview...hreadid=1640244&enterthread=y&arctab=y

Well, today I just got smashed by a drunk driver. I was driving along the road, when I saw the car in front of me begin to pull over to the side of the road. I thought that was odd...Then out of the corner of my left eye I saw a few cars getting tossed around. I look in front of me and an SUV is coming right at me.

I feel alright, but my back is a little sore. I'm doing really well considering my airbags didn't deploy.

Apparently, what the police told me was that this guy was driving down the street at about 15 mph. The police assumed he was drunk so they were in pursuit. Then the guy went over the center of the divider (3 lane 55mph highway with a divider). The police office went over the divider to follow him and that same police officer was subsequently hit by another car. So the drunk guy speeds up and continues going down the wrong side of the road and the vehicle he was heading toward tries to go onto the divider to get out of the way. He clips that car, which clips another car. Then the drunk driver continues off those cars straight into me. Needless to say, my car doesn't look good. I don't think it'll be totaled, but I doubt I'm going to have it for a month. We'll see how bad that turns out.

Update: 5/15
It's been a while so I thought I'd give an update. My car ended up with $9300 in damage. I should probably have it back in a few weeks or so (it's already been two weeks). Since the car was practically new, the $9300 wasn't a high enough percentage to total the car unfortunately. Also, the drunk guy didn't have inusrance (as expected) so worst case scenario is we are out the deductable. My back is feeling better, but it gets sore after activity.

Oh, and I was also subpoenaed for tomorrow. I've never had to testify before so that should be interesting.

Update 2: pic! All I had was my camera phone of course, and since it was at night, everything is hard to see, but here is a picture of the front of my car.

This one is hard to see too, but you can see how the hood is bent upwards forming a triangle. There are a bunch of car parts on the ground that are hard to see, as well as the fluids leaking from my car. It looks better in the picture than it was, since it was at night.

Update: Apparently the shop found more damage to the electrical systems and they now estimate that the total damage is around $12k. Unfortunately, had they originally seen these damages, I'm guessing insurance probably would've totaled my car.

On the good news front, apparently my insurance covers accidents against uninsured drivers, so we don't have to pay anything.

Update 7/9
I got my car back this week and it looks great. It actually looks sportier than before because the front grill is a little different. I used to have an all black grill but now the front grill has silver on the top which looks like an extension of the hood. I'll try to take some more pictures tomorrow. I'm really satisfied with the work they did and glad they offer a lifetime warranty on all their work. Total damage came out to $12,493.

The newer the car, the more damage it takes for the insurance company to total it...and it'll never drive the same :(

Be sure to get checked out in the hospital, just in case.

Yeah no kidding. When it comes to cars I've been pretty unlucky too.

My car that was stolen 9 months ago, needed to get a new transmission at 75,000 miles, and a new radiator right after that. The rear brakes also got loose once and screwed up something in the back. Then of course it got stolen. Now my new car gets trashed. We'll see how bad insurance says it is.

I'm not really sure how bad my back is. It felt ok right after the accident, but now that I'm settling down it feels worse every 10 minutes. I'm gonna get some sleep and see how i feel in the morning.

If he has insurrence, see a doctor for ur back right away and see if there's anything serious, if so make sure his insurrence pays out for that too. Cars with a lot of body damage getting repaired suck, when it comes time to sell it, you'll have a much harder time and it might not ever drive/run the same.

I highly doubt he has insurance (the police shoved him in the back of the truck real quick and took care of everything). They said he also had at least one previous dui. Regardless, I'm going to get my back checked tomorrow morning.

Man, that would piss me the fvck off. Sorry to hear that man.

Personally I would probly ditch the car and get a new one; I've heard too many times that a seriously fvcked up car just doesn't drive the same. :(

Well, got an x-ray done today, so we'll see how that turns out. The doctor seems to think that I'm ok, just some back pain. He said i was very lucky all things considered.

Yeah, a car is just a car, I'm not too worried about it. I'll be upset if I get my car back and the "new car smell" is gone though. I worked very hard to keep the new car smell for the last 9 months.

Get a lawyer ASAP. Do not trust what your doctor has to say from an x-ray. You can sue your own insurance company for uninsured motorist. The other driver being drunk is in your favor.

..I'll never understand why repeat DUI's keep getting their DL returned. I know somebody who's wrecked every vehicle they've owned thru DUI's and still has a DL. How bout a 3 strikes law on DUI's?? 3 strikes and loose the DL for life.

No, none of that yet. I should be getting all of the information today. It was kinda odd because it was a 4 car accident, and the drunk guy was thrown into the police car really quick and given a tranquilizer. The police took all of our statements, insurance, registration etc. and told us we'd be getting all the info soon.

If you take a drunk's license away a majority of them still drive. Jail time is what's really needed for repeat offenders.
