Just got my visa for studying in France this summer

I'll admit, having a Schengen Visa pasted in your passport is pretty kick arse. It's very pretty, has my name, my picture, a pretty cool holographic logo and everything-- but it cost almost as much as my passport did! My question is France offers citizens of the US 90 days visa-free, and I'm only going to be there for 52. So, why did I have to fork over $80 for something that is offered to US citizens for free?

There's different visas for different purposes. The "default" 90 day visa is for tourism purposes, I would imagine. If you are going there to study, you need a student visa.

$80 does not seem outrageous, for something that requires probable background checks and international paperwork. American visas cost a lot more than that.

Visas are neat. I've got a Vietnam one (cost $75 for tourism) and I'm about to apply for my Thailand student visa. Stamps ain't got nothing on visas

I was thinking that it was because I was studying (since I had to submit my letter of acceptance to the University with my application) but then at the same time, wouldn't I just be able to go over there and study anyway? It's not like the school's going to require me to have a visa.. it's just for getting through immigration, right?

Few love bureaucracy more than the French but, if schools in France are anything like schools in the US, you will need a visa for identification purposes and form filling. No Visa? No school.

when i studied in the netherlands back in 02, i was living over there for over 5 months without a visa... the school said they were optional, as long as we were traveling outside the country at least once during our stay...

i just dropped $115 to study in China for 70 days or so, mailed my information off today in fact

Like a government needs any reason to extort money from people.

Right..,

Just like the grocery store "extorts" money every time you buy food?

Ever think perhaps you are paying for a service?
