I basically take on different government customers, and show them how to leverage Network Appliance based data storage solutions. How to implement them, how to migrate their data around, which solutions work best for them, etc etc etc. I actually do the implementations too most of the time.

So you implement NAS storage solutions? That's it!?!
Well SAN too... ISCSI, FCP.

But yeah basically... it's not rocket science.

Good to hear... good to hear. We're in the process of implementing a SAN solution also, with me being the "lead". I was able to convince the IT director to get 15K drives for our 4TB SAN. Score!
Who'd you go with for the SAN? And what are you using it for?

Dell EMC

ERP, Mail, couple CAD dBs, Fileserver

OP you have a lot of good ideas in here.

Agreed... this thread has been very useful to me..

I still feel like I deserved more than a 5% raise... however, I have no intentions of quitting... IMHO 5% is the ok you were great, but we're stingy bastards so here's all we can give you raise. I'm not willing to give up on the 10% a year thing just yet... I just have to be smarter.

I spoke to one of my friends who also works for the same company, and he only got 3%. Seems like everyone got a crappy raise this year. With the exception of 5-6 overachievers.
so I bought some GMAT books, am going to take the test ASAP, and get my butt back into school for my MBA.

Ahhh sweet.... I designed a solution for the airforce utilizing ESX and Vmotion... very very very very cool and slick. Now combine all that with HP or IBM blade servers... boot from SAN....

I live in L.A. and pay $1200 a month for rent in an ok area, 1BD/1BA. For something good you gotta spend about $1500 but to each their own. I have no air-con (well it doesn't work) and no dishwasher. Nothing fancy at all.

Where do you live? The cheapest you can find an apartment in Irvine is $1200. Grrr...

Long Beach. Irvine is out of control. Back in 2002ish a buddy of mine paid something like $250K for a townhouse down there. I remember thinking that was a lot of money. He's sitting on a small treasure now.

The point is, ladies and gentlemen, that greed -- for lack of a better word -- is good.

Greed is right.

Greed works.

Greed clarifies, cuts through, and captures the essence of the evolutionary spirit.

Greed, in all of its forms -- greed for life, for money, for love, knowledge -- has marked the upward surge of mankind.

And greed -- you mark my words -- will not only save Teldar Paper, but that other malfunctioning corporation called the USA.

Thank you very much.

 I love that movie. 🙂

Is it Wallstreet?

Yes

Gordon Gecko 😉

"Umm wrong...public accounting pays like 15-20% a year raise every year. Investment banking pays like 30% every year at least with no cap when you read MD level. "

That's not a valid comparison for raises. Both those industries are up or out with you basically getting a promotion every year. If you make it 12 - 14 years, you have a good shot at partner in a CPA firm.

Same thing for investment banking. If you can make the cut every year, you get a promotion and a raise. More and more fail to make the cut.

Not 100% certain why z0mb13 thinks that Pleasanton is super cheap. Cheaper than a few areas a little closer to San Jose and Santa Clara, but it certainly isn't inexpensive to live in. That's where my house is (I live in Singapore right now).

Getting a 10% raise every year on average isn't a horrible goal. Chance are you'll top out at some point and it will not happen, but why not try for it. a 5% raise with no promotion actually is decent.

Michael

(hmm, I should calculate my average - been working almsot exactly 20 years but I haven't topped out yet and been lucky and successful so far in my career so I may be an exception)

i think the bigger the corporate, the less increment probably..
but 5% is decent and a start for better things to come

I just got a promotion and 10.5% raise. My manager says he's never seen a raise percentage that large, but that he fully supports it (raises start at the managers' evaluation, then go through a review panel and ranking system with upper management.) and :cookie: for me!

Check out my "HDTV thread" - I'm splurging already!

I think part of the problem is the high level of competition going on right now... well specifically one employee. He is just doing his absolute damndest to outshine everyone... he's in the same position that I am, kinda like the kid in the class who ruins the curve.... if you catch my meaning. I mean he's a nice guy, I actually consider him a friend... but he's such a damn eager beaver... He works like 90 hours a week... constantly kissing the bosses tuchas, etc etc etc... I feel like I'd have to work 100 hrs a week to compete... and I'm really not willing to do that.

-Max

No offense, but you just admitted that he's more efficient at doing his job than you
