Just got it today! I love it. Very first thing I did was added 512MB of RAM. This is my first apple, so far I've been extremely pleased. I downloaded UT2004 demo, and this notebook did quite alright (30-40fps on Onslaught) with med-high details.

Thats great!! :) Glad to see you are enjoying your new iBook. Too bad I cant afford one at the moment, because of the G4 purchase I just made. (see my sig.) I wanted upgradeability, so I got the G4. I love it!! :D

I had the UT2004 demo on cd, and I tried it on my eMac, and it played terribly, probably due to the Radeon 7500 with 32mb of VRAM, PC 133 SDRAM and slower bus speed. But I think I tried playing it with 256mb of RAM. Now that I have 640mb, I should probably try again, though I probably wont see much of a difference.

RAM makes a big difference, since I played it on the Demo at work (CompUSA) and I was getting about half the fps.

I just tried it again. The game actually ran very well. It was kind of jumpy, but it was playable. The RAM made a very big difference. The reason I thought I would not notice much of an improvement in the game is because it did not improve Tony Hawk Pro Skater 4's game play very much. But I was wrong.

Now I tried playing Onslaught instead of Deathmatch, and it played very slow, but playable. It was jumpy, but it was ok.

Onslaught is a bit too slow on my powerbook to be playable to my prefrences... but it runs like smooth as glass on my PC (for which i have a copy of UT2004 anyway) so I just stick to that.

I know Onslaught ran way better on your Powerbook than it did on my eMac!! :p When I would run to the field area on the level you have to play on the demo, things would get very slow, but I managed to cope with it.

Well for the kind of price the 12" ibook starts off at, being playable at the detail is short of amazing. How many $1000 Windows Based machines can do that?

The 12" iBooks are good quality, especially for their price (one reason I got one, other than because of OS X), and I have to agree with you CombatChuk, not many Windows based laptops for that price can do that. There's not many 12" windows based laptops that are that cheap either, in fact I don't think there are any (consider the Sony Vaio.....)

I don't think there's much of anything that competes with the iBook in the PC realm when price is considered. All the Apple laptops are priced reasonably well. Powerbooks are bit expensive, but then again so are IBMs and you get what you pay for!

Even if you find a 12" windows based notebook, it'll still be made completely out of plastic. The iBook boasts a magnesium-alloy frame and a polycarbonate frame. This is why the iBook is so durable.

Not to mention the impressive array of ports on the Apple laptops (including the iBook).

My *favorite* are the 6-pin firewire ports .....such a massive improvement over the PC standard 4-pin (unpowered) FW ports. Such a pleasure not having to carry an additional power adapter for my FW drive and no compatability problems with my camcorder when I'm traveling, etc.

I have a real barebones 800Mhz G4 iBook at work and I always use it instead of the lab Voodoo PC laptop when I give talks .... never a projector hookup problem, etc.

They're great machines. :)
