Since I won't get the rest of the system till xmas should I attempt to put a better/different heatsink and fan along with some artic silver?

I wouldn't mod ne thing unless you are very unhappy with your OC results. Since u don't know yet, don't touch it. That's my two cents.
 
just try it out first if the card is working or not.
Then you can start modding the card. Generally speaking the heatsink that came with card is poor quality or poorly installed ( IT IS mass produced).
I've done it with AS exposy and it worked great.
