how do you tell what stepping the processor is? mine says that pack date is 10/12/07. and the heatsink, i can assume the thermal paste is already applied to the bottom of the heatsink and all i have to do is install it on top without applying anything?

thanks

If you are using the stock heatsink that comes with the processor, yes, the TIM is already applied to the bottom of it -- looks kind of like 3 little felt pads.

With a pack date of 10/12/07, I'm pretty sure it's the M0 stepping. But you should download and run CPU-Z v1.42 anyway. On the main CPU tab, the stepping is shown in the "Revision" box.

I never have! Basic common sense is all that's required. Assemble your PC on a wood floor or table. Work in a T-shirt and jeans, never fleece or sweats or any clothing that collects static. And touch the steel and aluminum frame of your PC case often to discharge any static you may collect while assembling.

That's all there is to it. Have fun putting your new PC together :)

Ditto and I've worked on literally hundreds of systems/thousands of components with never a death related to static discharge.

...although I have yelled at my cats when they got curious about a new, irresistable box sitting open in the middle of the room...

:D

thanks this isn't my first time building either, but its my first time having anti static wrist wraps and wanna be extra cautious with my $230 MB.

another question about the processor. unless things have changed, i assume that you put the heatsink directly on top of the processor with the thermal paste touching the processor. the book shows that i have to cover the processor with the hatch thingy that was previously there.

and i wont finish this computer until my 3870 arrives. =[

??? i think i figured it out though. the hatch DOES go back onto the processor to secure it down tightly then the HSF goes on top of it.
