My new laptop's Athlon64-M 3000+ is supposedly 1.80ghz. However, in several applications (Aida32 and Kog Fu system specs script for mIRC) it is showing up as 800mhz. And when I right click My Computer, it shows up as 1.4ghz.

What's the deal? I tried going into BIOS but the options I have to change are extremely limited.

Hm, I dunno. It came with XP Home (barf) and I installed XP Pro on it instead. It doesn't have any software that I haven't personally overseen installation of (I loaded up the Compaq drivers disc for audio, video, and internal wifi).

Well, this is interesting. The BIOS lists it as 1800mhz flat, but Windows seems to think differently. So weird.

if you go to your power options (start, settings, control panel, power options), set the power scheme to "always on".

that might do the trick, but amd64s have quietncool throttling. shouldn't matter; if your system is plugged in and set to "always on", you will have 1.8ghz when you need it.

I'm 99% sure those underclock themselves dynamically.

Run a game in a window or somethign and then check the CPU speed.

It's designed that way, allows the battery load to be less and reduces heat so the fan doesn't need to come on so often. No need to concern yourself at all, as the processor can change its frequency dozens of times per second depending on load.

Hey, thanks a lot guys. I had an inkling that it was something like this. I remember hearing something about A64's in laptops altering their own speeds to save battery. DUH. I can't believe I didn't remember that.

Thanks for the help. :)
