i just got my bfg 6800OC, was very excited when i got it, i needed it to. My old card was a geforce fx 5200. Right of the box i got a score of 9543 on 3dmark03. Then later i use rivatuner to unlock the extar pieps and vertex shader, and it was succesful, no arctifacts at all. I ran 3dmark03 again and got a score of 10476!!. As good as my card seems, the temperature was the only bad thing. it runs on 47-50C on IDLE!!!!. and on full load it goes u pto 57C. Im thinking about gettign one fo those nv5 silncers i hear about all the time.

with that said, what settings should i put int he hl2 to get good amount of fps and have good video quality. IF it helps my monitor is refreshing at 70 hertz right now. Should i increase it?

MY RIG

INTEL P4/Presscot 3.0ghzE, with 1mb of L2 cache, 800mhz FSB
120gb SATA MAXTOR
1gb of DUAl Channel ram (kingston)
MSI 865NEO-2 PFISR (AGP 8x)
BFG 6800 OC

hahah, yeah GPU's run much hotter then CPUs. 50C is a great idle speed, well within spec. My 6800GT gets up to 80C, and thats perfectly normal.
Don't worry AT ALL. Sit back and play some games!!!! :D:beer:
For your system and HL2, I would suggest trying:
10x7 with all settings on max except for Antialiasing on 2x and Anioscroptic filtering on 4x, reflect world.
That seems like it should work good, but you are the judge. The "auto select" generally selects settings well below what your system is capeble of, BTW.

I don't know what your monitor is capeable of, but i would increase the refresh rate to at least 75Hz. Anything below that will hurt your eyes after a while.

I would say if you are pushing 90C, then something is wrong. On the 6800 series at least, i dont know about other cards.
My card gets to 75-80C but it is at Ultra speeds. 350/1000 are normal GT speeds, im at 400/1100. :D

ok, turn model detail up to high, texture up to high. Your card can handle that fine.
What resolution? you might have to turn Antialiasing down to 2x if you feel that the game is choppy.
Good luck :D

Alex, i have a very similar rig (a little slower) and you look to be getting similar results. I played HL2 mostly at 1280, 4x/8x, high detail, reflect world water and found that it very rarely dipped below 40-50fps...so you might try that too just to see if it is smooth enough for you. Also, I think people have had a lot of luck overclocking their 6800s (I'm assuming that by unlocking the pipes you may be willing to overclock as well) and you may be able to squeeze even more performance. I'm running at 380/820 (still have more head room on RAM), and I have heard of people going much higher. Have fun!

oh really. yea im plannign to overclok my card later on. right now im happy the way it is wiht the unlocking of the pipes and vertex shader (cant belive it was so easy).

I think this is the a pretty good card for the price. I got it in fry's for $250. check in outpost.com if you dont belive me

Does your card have purple and green capacitors? Does it have an a60 sticker?

..nvidia in their control panel lists a temp of 135C as danger...so I would say a 100C is probably ok...
