Just got my Altec 641's - Radio Signal Emitting from Speakers :(

Ok, well as the subject states I just got my Altec 641's and they sound pretty damn nice. Especially for the money they are a great deal. Regardless i have them hooked up properly, or so i think, its pretty simple procedure and there seems to be nothing to be wrong. The only modification that was done is that i had to extend the speaker wire for the rear speakers by attatching extra speaker wire to the wire itself. Could this be the cause? Thats really the only thing i can think of.
Eminem was playing and i sure knew that i wasnt playing that trash 😛 Its very quiet, but i can deffinitely hear it when there is nothing playing. Volume changes nothing. The only thing that stops it is turning off the power to the speakers. Any suggestions?

Thanks,

You are obviously picking up interference from a neighbor. Do you live in an apartment? Try moving your pc away from a shared wall. I had an experience with a neighbor that was big on amateur radio. Geekish... yes. But 10,000 watts of broadcasting power bleeding onto all my electronics from home stereo, pc speakers, cordless phone, etc... very annoying. If you can isolate the source, then have a talk with the offender. Other than that, I wouuld recommend moving your setup around. Sucks, but you have to do what you have to do when you live in close proximity with others.

Hmmm, well, i dont live in a apartment, and neighbors house really isnt that close at all. My room is on the top floor which is higher than the house next door. So... Hmmm, i guess its still a possibility tho, but i dont see my 65 year old neighbors listening to eminem often 😀 I'll check it out. Thanks

That was just my first guess... maybe someone can tell by your setup what is causing the interference. You are obviously picking something up. You can start by checking your speaker wires one by one to see if one is picking up anything. Then try other cables in the back of your pc. Isolate what is picking up the interference and then move or replace with a better quality wiring that shields from interference.

and you never know about grandma & grandpa! 😀

Where are the nearest broadcast towers? I had the same problem when I lived only a couple miles away from a big array of transmitters. One of them was on the same frequency that the speakers naturally "tuned" to. I did some looking on the FCC site and found that it's not uncommon and that there's not much to be done about it. I kept buying and returning speakers to Best Buy until I found ones that it didn't happen too severely with. Complete brand/model changes, not just a different box of the same speakers.

The fun thing was plugging the speaker's power into the wall, but no wires into anything else, no source at all, and listening to the music.

thats pretty weird, all i know is that yes, there is some kind of interference. maybe you're near some transmission pole or something.

Exactly kgraeme, every wire in your house could be picking up the interference when you plug into the "network." Enough to drive one batty!

I am not familiar with these speakers but you can go to radioashack and get a few .001 capacitators and put these across the leads right where they go into the speaker boxes and this will stop the interference. Poor shielding on either the wires or the amp is causing this.
