Just got my Acer 5672WLMi

I got this a few hours ago and man what a laptop. Very quick, looks good and i'm very pleased with it.

This being my first laptop I have a few questions. First of all, I just realized I never got a restore dics. The only disc I got in the box was a Acer disc but it says "Norton AntiVirus 2006, For distribution only with a new Acer PC". I'm just wondering if I'm suppose to create a restore disc or if I should've got one. There is some preloaded software on it and it poped up the first time I ran it called BackUP now. Now the reason I started wondering about this is because I was going to whipe the partions off of it, format it NTFS and load XP Pro on it. But i'm kind of leary about doing that wihtout a restore disc incase something screwed up. If I was to format and install XP Pro I can just goto the Acer site and download all the drivers for it there correct? http://www.acerpanam.com/synapse/forms/...teid=7293&areaid=7&formid=3394#results

Thanks in advance for the help.

I believe Acer includes a recovery partition, you might be able to burn discs from there.

As long as you have a copy of XP that will legitimately install using the serial for your machine, you can just install a fresh OS and use the drivers from their site.

I just read in the book that there is a 4gb hidden partition to restore from. Is there anyway to delete that partition? I don't want too but I will be doing a full format using NTFS so I just want to make sure that will be there after i'm done.

yeah i have a similar question regarding my soon to arrive 8200. i would create the restore disk, then wipe it. thats my plan anyway. i hate to go and do that to my brand new lapwarmer though... what is acer's logic with the FAT32 thing?

Here's what i've figuard out but have yet to do. When the computer starts up for the first time it will load of all Acer's stuff. It will restart a few times then bootup to windows setup. Follow all the instructions then I think it will restart again. When it boots up for the first time and isn't loading anything a "create restore dics" option will pop up. Follow the instructions, all you have to do is put in a DVD and it will burn a restore disc. In the back of the Acer booklet there is instructions on how to restore the factory defaults and you have 2 options. First one is from the hard drive and the 2nd is from the DVD. Now in the booklet it says that there is a 4gb hidden partition that has the all the restore stuff on it but i'm not sure if you format the hard drive to NTFS if it will delete that or not. But I have the disc and i'm going to try and load the factory defaults from that right now and if that works then i'm going to format and install XP Pro.

I just did the restore from the DVD and its starting up like it did the first time so I think that was the trick. You can get all the Acer stuff from the website so the bluetooth driver and software can be downloaded from there. Well i'm going to install XP Pro once this finishes.

Hyperlite, that was the trick. Also when I went to format there is a partition that doesn't have a letter by it, thats the hidden partition. Make sure you make the restore disc and you should be good to go. I installed XP Pro last night, now i'm just getting the stuff from the Acer site and loading that up.

cool...so let it do its thing, make the restore disk when it asks (does it have to be a DVD?), then install xp. the restore disk is just a precaution right?

Yeah the restore disc is just a precaution. I'm 99% sure all the files are on that hidden partiton as well. It doesn't have to be a DVD it can be 5 CD's as well.

I was thinking about getting the exact same model from compusa, and was also wondering how the restored cd work. Thanks for the post, and keep updating so I know what to expect when I do the same thing.

Its a real nice laptop, I haven't tried any gaming on it yet but from all the reviews i've read I guess it handles games pretty well. It replaced my girlfriends desktop so I haven't had the chance to play on it much but I'll get on it this weekend and see what it can do.

Don't want to worry you or anything, but...

Are you sure the recovery DVD does not need the hidden partition to work correctly?

In other words, if you wipe out the hidden partition, are you able to recover from the DVD you created?

When I installed XP Pro I deleted the 2 partitions but left the hidden partition. I didn't try but it didn't look like you could delete the hidden partition.
