Just Got Hit With W32.Blaster.Worm. Do I Need To Run The Specialized Cleaning Tool...

...or will NAV take care of it since I updated it just a couple of days ago? I would hope they would have incorporated it into the updates, since the virus has been around for a time.

Yes, I capitalized the first letter of all words in the title. Deal with it. 😀

1. turn on winxp firewall
2. clean using special tool - as far as i know NAV doesn't clean up blaster
3. install patches

How'd you manage to get hit?

I was playing Warcraft III online and NAV gave me a pop-up warning. I did not get a chance to read it before it autoclosed. Supposedly it says it has it in quarantine, but it is unable to clean the file.

Word of advice, before you go to bed tonight, leave your computer connected and download all the windows updates. Windows updates are not something that should be ignored. My employer learned that the hard way.

Good advice. Blaster is what prompted me to turn on auto update on all of my clients machines (which I really didn't want to do). None of them ever got it, but I spent a couple of days scrambling around making sure that none of them would.

I keep getting a popup from NAV about a lovgate virus or something.. and how it automatically deletes it and whatnot. I have NAV scan my PC every other day, with no virii found, and also tried using the tool they have and nothing found.. makes no sense.. hence the reason why I'm gonna just format later on tonight.

Would people please remember to patch their friggin machines? Its annoying since generally MacroShaft has a patch out days, weeks, or sometimes months before the worms show up.

Sorry, but I've spent weeks helping get rid of Nachi and Blaster on the computers at my university...

Well, NAV seems to have successfully quarantined it when it initially struck, but is unable to do anything other than the quarantine itself. I'll run the tool next.

Just a heads up: somehwere in the NAV removal tool instrustions, it tells you to kill system restore function on WinXP before running the tool. This is a good idea! I figured it was just some crap and didn't disable restore on my wife's computer when she got it, and that got the computer all screwed up. I ended up spending the weekend formatting and reinstalling EVERYTHING. Always fun to do...

Yeah, it just fixes the vulnerability of your computer. Only BEFORE you get teh virus. It doesnt get rid of it.
