What is up with this? My cell phone is a totallly different area code than my land line. Anyone that calls me has to call long distance?

I just tried calling my cell phone without area code and it does not work, added a +1 before the number and not work again. I then dialed 1+area code + phone number and now it works. Does that mean people have to pay long distance to call me?

Try calling with just the area code plus number. No 1 before it.

I'm guessing they screwed up and gave you the wrong area code. Call 'em back and enjoy going through the hassel of getting it changed.

very possible. That's something they used to ask you when you signed up for service, what your home areacode is for the phone/service. If you don't like it, you should contact them right away about getting a different number. You usually have 48hrs or so to cancel a contract so they should cooperate with you if you get with them now.

Some people LIKE having the cellphone number in a different area code, depending on where they do business, etc. Still they should have asked you.

Hmmm if i were in your position, i wouldnt post here, id call my cell phone carrier.

anyone near NYC would have probably had this happen to them already. NYC area codes are usually 718 or 212 but the cellphone companies usually assign 646 or 917 or even 347. It's common.

As far as anyone being charged calling you from their landline locally... that's a question I never found the answer to... I'd like to know also... try calling your local phone company.

Calling them now, this is my first cell phone so I did not know if the area code was supposed to be different.

Just because you have the same area code doe snot mean is not long distance. Most the time it is local, but there are cases when, even though you are in teh same area code, it is still long distance.

Just outside Chicago, if you live in the 847 area code, you have to dial the area code and number for all calls (including 847 area code numbers); even calling your neighbor.
It is not that uncommon.

I'm guessing if he lives in an area where you have to dial an area code he would have tried calling his phone with the area code.
