getting a athlon 64 3200+

but 3200 = 2.2 GHZ ??? but the way the chip is designed it rivles a faster intel CPU?

There's a good explanation somewhere, but the bottom line is, but every clock cycle (mhz) the Athlon performs more operations (work) than the Pentium4, so it needs less mhz to do the same work. Obviously you have checked the benchmarks, and that is why you are getting one.

Welcome to the dark side ! (maybe not so dark anymore)

3200+ is the performance rating of the chip. The new FX line dismissed this rather ambiguous nomenclature and replaced it with simple two digit numbers: 51, 53, and later the 55. To know how well it compares to an Intel processor you'd have to check some benchmarks and reviews (or know a thing or two about the CPUs).

Athlon64 derives from the 64-bit property of this type of AMD chip (Intel and AthlonXP are only 32-bit). The FX line is also part of the A64 series. Typically, Athlon chips perform better in games (the 64 series) than Intel.

Clock for clock the A64's blow the P4's away. It goes to show you that the traditional "high clock speed = all!" approach that Intel worked so hard to ingrain into our brains is just hogwash.

I bought a 3200 (NewCastle) last week. I think you'll be impressed.

Why would anybody be impressed with your purchase?

because it's just damn impressive.

You were obviously telling the orginal poster that he would be impressed with his purchase once he got it all up and running compared to it's intel counter part. woodscomp took it as you were talking about your CPU and telling the people in this thread that we should be impressed by your 3200.

You have to forgive him though, seems Intel employees are just as slow as thier processors these days.😛😉

Oh I thought I was supposed to be impressed that you saved enough cans to actually purchase that processor.

To each his own...

Obviously, it was so apparent even an idiot could have seen that with the statement he made...

come on guys! stop the fighting... where's the love? 🙂

yes... the A64's are quite impressive gaming processors...

what board did you decide on?

i like my epox 8kda3j very much except 🙂

NICE rig. Post how it does please. I'm running a 1700+ and a 2500+ so I'll be bound to be impressed no matter what.

Shim's right, where's the love? This is a nice system!

hehe.

holy crap ladies and gentlemen, either that is very amusing or it is very late at night, either way I just had one heck of a giggle.

I got it with a Asus K8V. I'm planning on dumping my IC7/P4 2.6 @3.0 and using HyperX3500 with this system. Also Vid card is ati 9700 AWI pro.

Any reccomendations on a PSU? the only spare I have right now is only 235W.

Until yesterday, I had 2 computers:
1)A64 3200 Newcastle (2.2Ghz) CG stepping slightly oc'd, comparable to a 3.2 P4
2)P4 3.0C Northwood oc'd to 3.5

For gaming, the A64 is the only way to go, and the benchmarks support this. At everything else (startup programs, music and video encoding, etc) the P4 felt alot faster. The difference was noticeable. I don't care what the benchmarks say, but for everyday usage, the P4 impressed me.

You can't go wrong with either brand, their pricing is also the same (for A64 chips, not the older AMD cpus).

For the A64, I recommend OCZ 3700eb platinum and the Epox board (if you want to do some oc'ing).

Enjoy your purchase.

So, if I want to go with AMD, what cpu is roughly equal to Intel P4/2.26 GHz 553mhz?

lol an Athlon XP 2400+

So, if I'm getting that, can I use the retail cooling fans that comes with it..or should I go with OEM cpu and other cooling device?

hmmm interesting. seems like I should't dump my p4 2.6@3.0 then, I love gaming , but I need to have an everyday use machine too I suppose.

Like I said before... A64 will flat out destroy Intels in everyday programs.. (especially everyday programs with 64 bit .exes) as soon as we get a RC of XP64 and some very good drivers...
after that Intel is in the pooper till they get thier desktop 64 chip out

you're probalby right

everyday use right now = 32 bit

everyday use with 64 bit should be better.
