Just got CoD4 and it doesn't work - solved

PB won't update the files so I can't play online...

"Downloading a global config file failed for the following reason:

couldn't connect to host"

I tried opening up the port on my router, no good. No firewall so there should be no problem. Tried manually installing the updates but the PB file folders do not exist....
 
Have you DL'ed the latest COD patches?
Also you may want to try to un-install and then re-install the game.

I saw in another thread that a PB update was done, so unless you manually update yours it's gonna be a PITA for a couple of days.
 
For what it's worth, I was trying to update punkbuster at my brothers house a couple of hours ago and it kept doing the same thing. Finally got it updated after many "couldn't connect to host" errors. They might be having issues at punkbuster.
 
downloading the files wont do jack because theres nothin in the steam folders to put the files at =(

but somehow i fixed it by running the pbservice file in that pb folder.....weird

I think the key is that once you run pbsetup and then update pb, you MUST reboot your PC. Installed and played thru the single player campaign, then tried online play last night for first time and got kicked. Updated pb, reloaded COD4 and still got kicked.

Rebooted my PC, then everything was fine. Played 2 hrs online without issue.
