Well, I just got back from my first college visit experience. All I can say is wow. I really liked the campus, and the new freshman dorm Barton Hall (It's the only freshman dorm with A/C). I definitely think that I will be applying there early decision. I want to dual major in Computer Science, and Electrical Engineering; and minor in Physics and Aeronautical Engineering. The information session was very well done, and the tour showed everything that I wanted to see. Well, just wanted to share with everyone my first visit experience.

I have an uncle there who is a professor in the Computer Science department ... so if you ever have Professor Moorthy be nice to him.

It was different, to say the least. I'm from suburban Long Island, about 20 miles out of Brooklyn, and Troy was very different from what I'm used too. It's not too bad though, because it's only like 10 minutes out of Albany, and civilization :p.

What other schools do you recommend? I have a list from my guidance counselor, but it's always nice to get others opinions.

RPI was my top choice when I applied to schools. Two friends of mine go there. I wound up going to Clarkson though.

Also, BU has a nice campus, and I really like its location. I visited some friends there (as well as saw a BoSox game) a week and a half ago, and I was really impressed with it.

I've already been to Columbia for unrelated things, and I liked the campus, but I don't know if my GPA is high enough. My PSAT scores are 1320 (630 Verbal, 690 Math, and the SAT is in a few weeks), and my GPA is 90.9. Of course, being a true computer nerd, my Computer Science average is 100.

LOL. I wouldn't mind looking at colleges there, it's just I don't have the airfare for that (nor do I want to spend a few days in a car).

If you enjoy being in a school with a 10:1 guy to girl ratio (with the 1 being some manly beast), in the middle of nowhere (Albany may be a city, but it's far from being a good one), with not much of a social life aside from stupid frat parties and getting drunk, then you're set. It's also relatively dead on the weekends since a most people go home.

I suggest you visit other colleges before getting all excited. I think just the idea of college is what is leading you to feel so strongly about the school.

Any other questions feel free to ask.

:)

I understand that RPI has a 3:1 Boy:Girl ratio, but it is right down the road from an all Girls college, so that evens things up at night.

I too think you might be a little too excited b/c it's your first visit. Slow down, take a deep breath, and visit some more places. The reason I say this is because I made the mistake of visiting a school, liking the visit, and then hating the place for 4 years. I made a few visits to schools, it just happens that this one visit blinded me and hurt me in the long term

Ditto on the school being in the middle of nowhere. Albany is not the hot spot, and living close to NYC you'll probably miss the big city. I know I missed Chicago a ton when I left it.

Apply to schools with 50-50 sex ratio as much as possible, I beg you. My school was 60-40 and that was bad, I couldn't imagine a school with a worse ratio. The fact that there is a women's school nearby, forget it. No, no, don't say but it's close. Go to a school thats already 50-50 or better in your favor.

LOL as for your major/minor choices. Write that down on a piece of paper, and open that piece of paper in 4 years. It will make you laugh your head off.

I understand your idea behind missing the big city, but I don't really visit the city that much. The only time I go into the city is when I go into my dads office to work on the network, or to help the men out (He owns a trucking and rigging company). I don't mind being in the middle of nowhere, if I can get a really good education.

The Quad has A/C too, or did when I went there. Regarding your majors, unless you're transferring in 40 AP credits or are smarter than the kid from Real Genius, you're going to fvcking kill yourself when you realize what you've gotten yourself into.

anyways, i don't think your major choices are impossible, god knows if i started over now i could definitely do it. but you have to have very good study habits (it took me 2.5 years to get good at studying... *sigh*). good luck.

When you say jesus on the 90.9, is that a good jesus, or bad? I wish it were higher, but english and history brought it down (RPI doesn't have an english or history requirement, so that makes me happy too. They only require 24 credit hours of Humanity and Social Sciences.). For my major topics, ie AP Physics, AP Computer Science, and Engineering, my averages are all between 97 and 100.

Yeah, the Quad has A/C too, but I was only speaking about Freshman Hill. Only Barton Hall has A/C for freshman dorms.

LOL. My High School gives our GPA's out of 100, they don't (or won't) convert to out of 4, because of the different weightings and curves that colleges offer (or so I've been told).

Wow, you sound like you maybe have something against RPI. There's plenty to do on the weekends, the only time people go home en masse is on a 3 day weekend. There are frat parties, bars downtown, and parties at Sage, SUNY Albany, and even Siena.

KraziKid, I'm finishing up my junior year at RPI. I came in with similar numbers to you, so I wouldn't worry too much about being accepted. Now, I'll be totally honest with you. If you, like ducci and his compatriots above, are coming to school for girls or parties, RPI is straight up not the school for you. The ratio is three to one and Troy is not New York City or Boston. If you have a car, Albany is very close, and you'll find things a lot easier.

You don't have a prayer of getting into Barton, by the way, so don't hold your breath. They've recently renovated the other dorms though, so it won't be as bad an experience as I had. Air conditioning matters for the first few weeks of the year, and the last couple. Other than that, you're going to be worried more about the heaters, trust me ;). Okay, so should you come here? RPI isn't MIT, but I can live with that. It has a good reputation with anyone who matters, so long as you don't mind getting "Rensselaer Polywhat?!" from ignorant people. Haha... like I said above, if you're coming to school to get an education, RPI is a good place to get it if you don't mind working. You'll work your rear off, but you can blow off steam on the weekends.

If you want any more info about RPI, three guesses as to my AIM name ;).
