what a crappy comdex. i couldn't believe the lack of companies, from all parts of the industry: ibm, maxtor, seagate, western digital, intel, creative, antec, sony... it was like they just didn't exist. ati was open by reservation only, and nvidia was at the bellagio for only a few days, completely unassociated with comdex. it was truly depressing.
however, there was some cool stuff. nokia had a huge display,
this phone and others were pretty badass.
tablet pcs are all the rage (
), the technology is interesting behind it but they're expensive and not that useful for most consumers.
mira had more potential (aka smart display), i was impressed with the handwriting recognition and the speed. but for $1000 starting, it's got a ways to go before it becomes something i'd be interested in purchasing. plus, someone can't use the computer at the same time they're using the smart display. they said they're working on that in the next couple of revs. i also got to ride a segway. pretty fun, however not $5000 worth of fun. not quite ready for prime time, either. i did finally find a laptop i can live with (
toshiba 4010 portege), so that was a plus. and i got a
lian li 52 usb for $75. but man... i hope it's never that bad again. everyone i met there was shocked at how bad the show was. oh well, next year.
