I had to drive my girlfriends father to pick up their car, which was in to change the rear brakes.

I walked into the dealership with him and I overheard the cost for repairs.

$852.00!

Is this for real? $852 just to change a pair of brakepads and to polish the rotors?
I mean the most expesive non high performance brake pads cost around $50-60...so 2 would cost $120 max!

Anyone else have an experience like this, and what did you do?

Highway robbery. My mechanic wants 400 bucks to change my timing belt (nothing's wrong with the car yet, it's just about due for a timing belts change) and I doubt I could do it myself due to lack of proper equipment. :(

Jeebus man, I was charged $160 and was thinking I got ripped and it was the same deal - new pads (medium quality) and turned both rotors..

He might as well have just bent over... that's a bunch of BS right there.

Edit: By the way I drive a 92 Nissan Sentra... so it's probably close to the same kind of brakes...

damn that's a lot of money. If that's just a quote, I'd definitely say go somewhere else.

BatmanNate: 400 for a timing belt is probably twice what i just paid to have mine done ( it was 373 for that and cv joint boots installed). Try and find someone else but don't wait until it breaks, that can cause some damage that would cost far more to fix.

I called my Nissan dealership to see what a 30K mile service would cost for my '00 Sentra (essentially an oil change, new air filter, rotate the tires, plus inspecting a bunch of stuff) and they told me $400. :Q Hello! Uh, no. I took it to a local place and had everything that was recommended done for about 60 bucks.

Total ripoff... they won't see me again except for a warranty repair.

That can't be just for brakes. There must be something else that was done while the car was in there.
I don't believe that price just for rear brakes for a second.

Neither could I, but I saw the receipt...and that was all that was listed. 2 rear brake pads and polishing of the rotors. They listed the cost of the pads as $200.

Cars arent that hard to fix. Goto library, get chiltons manual. Job half done. Next part will require some time, pain, beer, more time, but in the end, you'll save alot of money doing simple repairs yourself.

A brake shop once gave me an estimate of 900 bucks to fix my brakes said everything was f#k'ed up, later found it only need a $5 can of brake fluid to fix. :Q

ED: forgot to say that ofcourse I didn't fall for it.

I don't believe it. If the fix was only for new pads or shoes, plus turning or polishing the drums or rotors, the total bill would have been $150/$175 tops....probably less. There was more involved in this bill you didn't know about.....or this whole topic is a scam.

Dealerships have to compete with the local shops price-wise. They cannot get away with total gouging, not for long anyway. Pays to shop around, I guess. Although I'd prefer a set of Nissan pads over pads from Auto Doddle......

Get a second opinion...just like going to the Doctor.
That is an exhorbitant price, and then some! Unfortunately, some of these places see ma and pa coming, and figure they'll pay the price, as they probably always have. :(

your all nissan dealerships suck.. the ones around here are great. The fact that i like the nissan dealerships so much around here is why my last two cars have been nissans.

the service is great, and thier prices beat out all the other mechanics.
