Just got back from the dentist

Got a filling. Got another filling to do at the end of the month. I really need to floss more. :\

Mouth is still partially frozen, feels so weird. It's going up to my eye.

It is an atot unwritten rule to post dental related procedures, so just doing my part.

I haven't been to one in 5-6 years. My dental practices aren't excatly good. I'm scared but I think I should go in for cleaning and check up one day.

I have been three times in the last month for crowns. First visit was a success.
The last two have been pretty bad. The dentist failed to get me numb twice now. They used 6 ampules of various stuff each time, and each time they drilled a test hole till I gave them the high sign that it was not working. They filled the hole with some flowable goop, and I went home with my face numb to the top of my head, and a few days of a sore jaw from all the injections.
They try again Wednesday with a stabident, where they drill into the jawbone and deliver the goods right at the root of the tooth.

That sucks. I only had one "fail" and it was not that bad. He just did not put enough freezing agent and as he was drilling I suddenly felt pain and kinda twitched. He stopped, put more in, came back in 5 minutes and continued. I'm not sure how it works, but my dentist uses a stuff that does not require a needle. All I feel is something like a tube against my gum, and then it starts to feel numb.

I'm still numb right now, but it's slowly going away.

I really need to slow down on the pepsi though, that's probably what's been ruining my teeth. That stuff is so bad for your teeth it's not even funny. It's the acid, and then all that sugar to add insult to injury.

that is pretty disgusting. you should go as soon as you have time. hell it's fucking free for cleanings with dental insurance.

I'd find a new dentist. My last dentist sounds like your current one -- he injected so much anesthetic that my face would droop for hours but during the procedure I still wasn't totally numbed. That happened one time, never went back.

Current dentist barely used any, the injection was almost painless and there were no scary symptoms post-procedure. Totally different experience.

I have historically been very very difficult to numb in the lower jaw. I have nerve pathways that are strange.

Don't you have a dental plan?

I have bad gums due to not flossing for most of my teenage years. As a result I have periodontal disease, which has resulted in some expensive and painful gum related dental work. I now brush, floss, and use mouth wash twice a day and are getting this under control, but I'll probably eventually need surgery as the gums I have already have been damaged quite a bit.

I was reading about a new mouthwash yesterday that could target the specific bacteria that causes tooth decay and, in theory, could help lead to the elimination of tooth decay all together. I'd be down with that.

Last time I went to the dentist was 3 or 4 years ago, no problems then, just a cleaning.

Before that, the last time I had been to a dentist was in 1985. No issues or problems then either. I guess around 23 years between trips is pretty good.

Flossing has nothing to do with it.

You have bad gums due to bad genes, poor nutrition or too much sugar.

Flossing also helps the gums as it makes them stronger. If you floss and your gums bleed it's because they're not strong enough, as you floss the bleeding will stop. I'm in that stage myself, where I was not flossing enough. I probably would not have had these cavities if I flossed more, so it's my fault. I've been flossing more now, but I really need to start doing it every day. It's just such a huge pain to do, not pain as it hurts, just hard work. But better that then later on having dentures.

There's probably a downside, like tongue or throat cancer 😀

How much sugar do you eat?

Drink any cokes for dinner? Drink cokes before you go to bed? Eat sweets after dinner?

That's part of my problem too, I have LOT of sugar. A couple pops per day, and usually Coke or Pepsi, which are among the worst as far as acid levels. I make it a good habit to drink water or at least rinse my mouth after drinking or eating sugar products though. I'd switch to diet, but then the aspartame comes with a whole other set of problems. Really I should quit that stuff but water is just boring, sometimes I want something else to drink.

My dentist was telling me to try to find a product that has Xylethol in it, as that kills the bacteria that cause cavities. Does not take care of acid erosion though...

My wife is a dental hygienist who works for a Periodontist, so I know exactly what you are talking about. Sucks big time. Some people can have bad oral hygiene and never see any problems their entire life, while some people are religious about oral hygiene and they need all of their teeth replaced. Genetics deals some people bad hands.

Anyone can feel free to ask any questions about oral hygiene and I'll answer what I can. I can say that after I met my wife, I brush and floss religiously. One cleaning session from her was enough for me. 🙂

Once you stop bombing your mouth with pop, water will start tasting good again.
