i'm going to nyc
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Wow NYC is a busy place.........................

thursday - I had to go to work in long island..rented a car for Newark ehhhhh tolls are killer and spent like 5 hours in traffic (Verrazano bridge is 6 bucks to cross grr) - anyways spent the whole day mostly in long island driving around... Later that night we stayed at a Hostel around 55 CENTRAL PARK NORTH110TH ST AND LENOX AVE - I thought I was going to robbed around there but still not bad for 45 bucks a night (you had to share a unisex bathroom.

Friday - Was able to get the Waldorf Astoria for $100 on priceline for two nights. The Waldorf is great - very accomadating to say the least. Walk to time square + shopped etc.

Sat. - was going to half price tickets for shows in the middle of time square but really didn't feel like waiting in a 2 mile line. Instead went down to Smithsonian - Native American museum (free - very intresting). Then walked the Brooklyn Bridge.. Later walked too chinatown and my sister got a turtle (the real little ones) didn't have a chance to eat there but just admired the scenery. That night - went to a place in Little Italy - Panazio (sp) - not bad very affordable.

Sun - took the subway to LGA - we got off the subway it what seemed to be a bad neighberhood. I think they knew we weren't from there. I have never been on a bus with so many people (m60).

Anyways, It was a great trip... NYC is a "unique" place and real change from the norm for me :)

You MUST go to CBGB's :) It's a little punk rock club in the village. If you don't like punk rock, you won't like it, but if you do, this is where it all began, realy.

Forget that you MUST see the work being done near the WTC disaster, I saw it at night for a few with all the lights on. When they said there was people working there day and night NON STOP they really f*cking ment it.

take a ride on the Staten island Ferry. It's a nice ride in the daytime, but it might be a tad cold to stand out on the deck :D

Check out museums (Museum of Natural History, Museum of Modern Art), central park, washington square park. Look for street performers. look for vintage and punk shops in the East Village.

It's restaurant week, and MAYBE MAYBE you might be able to get to a nice restaurant like Nobu.

Check out Chinatown and get cool bootleg stuff and fruits and veggies you've never seen before. Like DURIANS (the green spiky footballs)!!! and Lychees! and Bubble/Pearl Tea!

Check out Times Square. If you're not a city-slicker then Times Square is quite a site. Watch a Broadway show! Rent is wonderful. Phantom of the Opera! Lion King! whatever!

Check out the Cloisters! It's this big-ass castle they flew in from Europe. It's a big museum with an optional admission fee.

Go to Chinatown, check out New Green Bo on Bayard, or Joe's Shanghai on Pell St. Both have awesome soup dumplings and other great dishes. And make sure you visit the Egg Cake Lady on Mott St. (right near the church), her egg cakes are the best, much better than the ones sold by the street vendors on Canal St. Big Wong on Mott St. is good if you want a quick, cheap meal. Food in Chinatown is pretty inexpensive in general, lots of restaurants to try out, and if you get bored, walk across Canal to Little Italy, lots of great restuarants there too.

SoHo is a cool place to visit, especially on a warm, sunny weekend, you'll see lots of artists selling paintings, photographs, etc. There is also a wine shop in SoHo that sells only NY wines, they have an extensive tasting bar, definitely something to check out. Lots of art galleries, coffee shops, etc.

I second what Benchiu said. Go to Chinatown and go to Joe's Shanghai. Get the soup dumplings. They are unbelievable! There are 3 other Joe's in NYC but the one in Chinatown is the main one I believe.

<< QUEENS! >>

You must be kidding...
;)

No but seriously, there's nothing to do in queens, and it's ghetto except for bayside and beyond, and there it's all residential.
Manhattan's where the party's at!

Holy cow, by the time you leave NYC you will have gained 50 lbs with all of that eating ;).

Is there anything that you're interested in specifically, e.g. a certain type of food?

I agree with all of the above....the key is to be adventurous and *walk* as much as possible so you don't miss anything. Be sure to ask people if you are a bit lost, most of us New Yorkers are not remotely as rude as people say .... especially to out-of-towners who are visiting and helping what is left of our economy since Sept (especially in Lower Manhattan).

If you are planning on viewing the WTC site, for example, you could combine that with a trip to Chinatown (Joe's Shanghai is a must) because they are only a few blocks apart. You could also check out Jand R if you're into computer gear/music/electronics, it's 1 1/2 block from the WTC.

If you're into camera gear, head for B & H (34th and 9th Ave)...it has to be seen to be believed. Disney World for camera buffs. My family has to drag me out of the place.

Check out the Upper West Side .....Zabar's (kitchen ware + wonderful lox), Sarahbeth's kitchen for brunch, Grey's Papaya for the cheapest lunch in NYC (hot dogs and tropical drinks) .....work off the 1,000s of calories by walking across Central Park to the Metropolitan Museum or the Guggenheim or Frick. Or, if you're too full to walk, stay on the West Side and check out the Natural History Museum and the recently re-done Planetarium. Lincoln Center where the Ballet and Opera season's are underway.

Don't miss Time's Square and if you want to catch a show check out the TKTS booth where there are usually great deals on tickets.

Too bad that the Baseball season hasn't started....talk about the quintessential New York experience, a Yankee or Mets game!

Etc., etc.

Oh and *hey*, GuybrushThreepwood, you must be a real New Yorker ....great call on the Cloisters! Went on my second date with my future husband there..... (never mind how long ago that was).

Enjoy your visit!

Here are some other great places to see:

161st in the Bronx (ask for Crazy Eddie)
Hunt's Point in the Bronx
116th and Lex in Manhattan
Bed-Stuy Brooklyn

You should visit the Empire State Building and go to the observatory deck. Also, you should take the New York Skyride, which is located inside in the Empire State Building.

If I have the streets right, go to 60th and 3rd avenue. There is a great place called Serendipity 3. A great place to eat, especially for desert. Get the "frozen hot chocolate."

If you have the time, go see a broadway show, perhaps Beauty and the Beast or Lion King. And also go to Madame Hussad's Wax Museum.

Serendipty is on 6th between 2nd and 3rd. It's not a great restaurant but the deserts are AWEsome. The downside is that it is a popular place for rich bratty Upper East Side kids to have their birthday parties.

Right near there is Angels @ 62nd on 1st Ave. It is one of the best restaurants in the city and very affordable. It is so good, the line is out the door on a rainy Tuesday night.

NYC is also choc full of good comedy clubs.
