Just got back from my trip

Went from San Jose,CA to Phoenix, to the Grand Canyon, to Vegas, and just returned an hour ago. My Corolla is a beast, i did the gallons / miles travelled method, and while not 100% accurate, I yielded just under 46mpg for the trip.

62mph on most freeways, AC on. Stayed in Phoenix for three days, and stuck around Vegas for two. So, it does include some city driving, but mostly highway.

Awesome. I had a friend who did something of the same in his old cavalier. That thing was a beast too.
How long were you gone?

those 1.8s are very fuel efficient! That beats the 42mpg I got in my Focus, but I had to deal with mountains (and a 2.0L 16V i4 Duratec).

You should have used the odometer or trip meter and saved fuel receipts to do the calculation.

I drove a Toyota minivan from San Francisco to San Jose and the on board meter told me 33 MPG. When I calculated the fuel consumption using the trip odometer and fuel receipts, I actually only achieved 28 MPG. That's almost 20% off.

62 on the freeway, somebody quick give me a knife so I can slice my wrists. High miles are run but I'll always go for speed first. For a trip of this distance you're literally talking additional hours spent behind the wheel just to save several dollars on fuel!

Me and my brother took the truck all summer from Bainbridge, GA, up to Plymouth, IN, up to La Valle, WI.. Drove everywhere with it over the course of two months. Totaled around 5,000 miles. Total for the 2004 Ford Expedition? 16MPG

No really, just in my 1,200 miles of weekly trips while in Wisconsin I racked up nearly $450 in fuel bills! :Q

Vacations are about more than just getting from point A to point B as fast as possible. This summer I did a trip to the Oregon coast and averaged 55 mph over 2000 miles.

That's what I did.

My car is a 2007 Corolla LE, Manual Transmission. It was myself, my wife, and all our stuff for the trip. There were some mountainous regions but mostly open road.

I drove straight from SJ to Phoenix, that's 12.5 hours. Assuming i went the speed limit of 70 where available, and 65 the rest that's 6 miles per hour on average, i would have saved about an hour to an hour and a half on the first leg of the trip.
I used approx 17 gallons getting there the slow way: $51
Would have used an estimated 20.5 gallons the quick way: $61

so about $10 i saved, but it cost me an hour.

You didn't have kids in the back, then 😀

The closest I got is ~30mpg in a 2.2L Cavvy doing trips up/down from Minnesota. Wish I could do 60mph - my average is closer to 85mph.

Beast? No. A Corolla is no beast. If it was, it would be putting out 4x more horsepower, torque, and getting less than half that mpg 😛

My dream is to one day drive from Anchorage all the way down to the southernmost part of Chile....I think It'd be an awesome adventure.

Nice work, OP!

I drive from Orlando FL to Cookeville TN every so often. It's 650 miles one way. I typically drive 65 mph on the I75 which is 85% of the trip at 65 mph. From Chattanooga to Cookeville is about 100 miles of country highways. The trip takes about 11.5 hours. I've driven it at 60, 65 and 70 - it always works out to be 11.5 hours mostly because of traffic.
