if crossing cuts means that you actually made extra cuts at every crossing, then you would have to bend it into an s and make 2 parallel cuts. I think that is the only solution.

yakko, that wouldn't work.
Look at the area in red here. One of those pieces are obviously much larger then the other, since one is on the inside of the curve.

Hence the pieces are not of equal size. To divide a 7oz bar into 7 pieces, each 1 oz, the bars would need to be equal size. Assuming the bar is the same density throughout, your idea wouldn't work.

cowboy dan, u got it. It was the exact same question except that i made it harder for myself by asking right after that. So essentially the problem is to divide the bar into 7 equal pieces using two cuts? and the interviewer said yes.

It seems like as soon as you get real close to the answer the interviewer is suppose to add a restriction making you come up with another solution to the problem. that way they can use one problem to get many answers from you. I suppose if you asked about whether the problem was just to divide it into 7 pieces, shape of the bar and knife, and if the cuts had to be straigt and if you can bend it then that already shows you have very good problem solving skills.

Overall i thought the interview was very shallow considering that it was only 30 minutes and based on this interview they will let you know if you made it to the second round. For the second round they are alreaady flying you out to HQ.

by the way if somebody knows a website that list a whole bunch of those type of questions and answers to them, that would be a big help for the 1. and 2. round interviews I will be going to with the big five consulting firms (this is what i am really gunning for).

If you want a ton of those types of questions.... pick up a study guide for the LSAT test.

It is loaded. Lots of fun.

Pretender,

It says crappy example. I wasn't going to spend a lot of time drawing a nice diagram. You adjust how you bend it when you actually are doing the cutting.

Yakko, in order for a spiral to work, the gold would have to thin out on the outer rings.

Besides, with your spiral, one cut crosses the other. So according to the rules, your diagram actually had 4 cuts.

<< But then he said each time u cross a cut line it is another cut. >>

How about some sort of shape and cut like the dollar sign? Sort of an "S" shape (only with the top and bottom of the shape remaining horizontal), with two vertical cuts. You might have to play around with the actual shape and cuts to get it even, but I think that would work.

Well I believe I am the only one who figured out how to get (7) pieces.

I think I should get a new stick of 128 MB Mushkin Ram PC133 Cas 222.
