Hey I just started building credit. I'm 20 years old I've had a credit card for almost two years (student card). Three monthes ago I applied for nextel service and got approved for 3 lines. I've been applying for amex blue card for awhile. I just want it because it looks cool and I don't see that many people with them. How much credit limit do they usually put on these cards? I don't plan on using that much just for internet purchases. I pay off my bills in full so don't get worried, I handle my money well.

Actually I'm looking to invest a cuple thousand dollars but I don't know where to start.

$500-1000. Soemtimes as low as $300. Don't keep applying again and again, it is screwing up your credit score.

If you have fairly low/little credit, your credit limit won't be that high. Mine is only $2000 iirc

I dont understand why anyone would want American Express. The only reason i can think of is that they have a card with unlimited credit for those who qualify.

As a merchant, AMEX charges an additional fee so that I can accept Amex payments along with visa/Mc/discover/etc

As a consumer, Amex charges anual fees and is not accepted nearly everywhere as Visa/MC due to the reason stated above...

if you want to reduce your cc limit, would that affect your credit score either positively or negatively? or nil effect?

Blue has no annual fees and I like AMEX because they offer excellent protection for consumers.

Blue is like a regular CC and does not charge annual fees. It was my first card I got 8 years ago and they have never raised my limit from 3200. Whereas another card I have seems to raise my limit every six months and is up to 15k now.

I thought Blue has only been around since 99?

ya there is no annual feeon the one i got. I didn't get the student blue just the regular one (but i did get pre approved for the gold card which was $100 annual fee) . Also, there are benefits at some businesses that give you a discount for using amex plus the benefits are pretty good (up to 5% cash back).

My other CC from wells fargo is visa has 1.5K limit and like 2% APR (for like a year).

I'm already planning to get a vid card (for hl2!), a plextor dvd burner, and maybe (big MAYBE) a laptop.

It really depends on which score you are referring to...

For your FICO score, it actually hurts your score to do this...one of the factors in determing your score is your total credit debt versus your total credit line. If you reduce your limits, the ratio of your credit debt to your available credit increases which hurts your score.

It doesn't sound right, but it's true...

Yeah, mine started as an Amex Optima card and was switched to blue in '00.
