I just got a Macintosh LC575 for free from a school that just shut down in our school district, and im trying to figure out what the heck i can do with it. Id kinda like to reformat the hard drive and either put the mac os back on it or put linux or something like that on it. any ideas?

Fishtank it, sell it as a special mac style case on e-bay then let someone else worry about it.

I say e-bay it. Someone is probably out there looking for some retro mac parts that would pay a few bucks for it.

Gut it, sell the insides on eBay.
Get a m-ATX board
Build yourself a P4 2+ghz
Put a LCD screen in the front
Leave it looking like a Mac

Blarg. That was a practically useless machine when it was introduced. And this from an old Mac user.

Well let's see. If you can scrounge up an old free copy of EIMS (Eudora Internet Mail Server) you could use it as a spam relay. You could pick up an second ethernet card, install IPNetRouter and use it as a NAT/DHCP/Router. But a Linksys box is cheaper and easier.

Most of the Linux variants for Mac boxes want a PowerPC chip. That box you've got predates the PPC. You could try this version of linux which runs on the older 68K chips.

Honestly though, it's a damn fine doorstop. I just dumped my old Quadra 800 which was a far better machine than you've got there. I couldn't even sell it at a garage sale with software and games.

The one I tried to use at my wife's school last week had a network card that was slower than a 9600 baud phone modem. The most appropriate use I could think of would be as a bad example.

We used those in school like 10 years ago. We'd play "Where in the World is Carmen San Diego?" and "Midnight Madess". Those were the days... ;)

i almost nabbed one of the PowerMacs, but this white trash lady claimed them all and was keeping a watchful eye. I couldnt believe it, but a whole hayrack and a few lunch tables full of old/new mac and pc parts, whole computers, monitors, copy machines, and fax machines sold for 3 dollars! The lady that bought it didnt know jack about any of it. She picked up a dot matrix ink ribbon and studied it for awhile before asking me what it was. If only i had gotten there a little earlier to bid on it...id be getting rich off of ebay as we speak.

It's not even good enough for the garbage.

It might run m68k linux, badly. It won't run any MacOS newer than 8.1 (yuck).

Basically, you're looking at performance comparable to a 33MHz 486-SX.
