Just got an MSI 7950, advice?

Okay, I just switched from an Nvidia 570 to an MSI 7950 and I'm a little concerned about a few things.

For instance, it gets pretty loud sometimes. I've only just installed drivers and used it a little bit... Counter-Strike wouldn't even start, but that might just be a little hiccup. StarCraft 2 the fans on this thing got LOUD AS **** particularly in the menus. My 570 didn't do that.

I use a 40" TV across the room as a secondary monitor and with Nvidia's program i'd have to go in and tell it to start using that TV's speakers instead of the speakers connected to my PC. What is the best way to do that with catalyst etc? Including, is there an option to have it pipe sound through BOTH at once? What's the most efficient way to switch between 1 monitor and 2, and to modify the sound source(s)?

I haven't OC'd yet although I think this one comes pre-OC'd... I'm worried about the incredible fan sound in StarCraft 2 menus and worried it'll be present in other games, etc. Especially if I OC more which everyone seems to talk about doing with these.

I have a Cooler Master case with a big ass fan on the top and the side, with the 570 the system was amazingly quiet in and out of games.

I was just looking in the owner's thread for the card here and once I can reboot and make the afterburner software work, I'll try adjusting the fan speed. Is that safe to do? Is it going to force the card to run hotter than it should?

Swearing is not allowed on the technical forums

it certainly adds to the discussion, but what the fuck do i know.

I don't know what you do know, but I know that you need to take some time off to wash your keyboard out with soap.

Worth investigating what's going on with your temps and fan speeds in MSI Afterburner. Both MSI cards I've owned have had decent acoustics.

What are your temps and what is your fan speed while gaming?

Thanks.

I was just trying CS:GO with fan speed locked at 56, temps were like about 90 I think... it says max is 94.

Then I tried locking it at 59, temps were I think 83?

I don't have it OC'd right now really, it's 880 clock speed.

What's a safe temp to run at while gaming?

Way to hot... What kind of case do you have again?

Is this a TF3? should only be audible at 70% or more.

@ 90c your fan should be maxing out, not sitting in the 50's. EDIT- Is this on Auto fan control?

Mine now hits high 50's or mid 60's - I have seen it hit 70's in Heaven, but that was overclocked.

This is the exact card: Twin Frozr III

This is the case:

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16811119160

It has a big fan on the side, and one on the top... fans aren't obstructed... back of the PC is a little close to a wall but, not improperly so.

I turned off auto fan control because it seemed like if it was on it just got too loud. The only way I could game and not have it outrageously loud was by locking it at 59, which is still kind of loud... at least compared to what I was used to with my 570 Nvidia.

59 might be at the edge of tolerability but I'd really rather do 56.

Is there a way to let it do auto but also prevent it from getting crazy loud?

Okay, so you got a HAF case. I would say RMA time. Card should be running nice and cold in that case. The fan should not be loud at all. Your case has way better air flow than mine, your temps should be better.

Again, RMA Time. Sorry dude...

Edit - I returned my first card for running too hot as well.

Grrrrrr

I was really hoping that wouldn't be the situation. I just had to do a Newegg RMA very recently for some bad RAM. I don't want to deal with this... ugh.

Hmm, there is nothing else it could be? Ha, man... hard thing to accept having to return it.

Can you tell me exactly how you have your afterburner thing set? I was looking at the 7950 thread a bit ago and I saw some stuff about installing other programs in addition... is that necessary?

Do I really need to leave auto fan on at all times?

I really appreciate your help figuring this out Face2Face,

If you could give me your stats on exactly how you have the card set up, maybe a screenshot of your afterburner thing? and then tell me what temp you get in CS:GO or StarCraft 2... or some other common game I probably have (I have a lot) it'd be great to be able to do such a direct comparison.

But I'm sure you're right and I need to RMA this thing... ugh.

There is a file you will need to install if you want to change the voltages to the memory or the core I believe. Sorry it's been awhile since I overclocked this card so I don't remember it all off the top of my head. You don't have to leave your fan speed on Auto, but you want to target at least 70C or below. I would strongly recommend you RMA. I know it sucks. That's why I buy all my video cards locally now. I pay a little more, but I always have to bring them back it seems for issues.

Okay, let me boot the old beast up 🙂

Interesting, I'm running CS:GO again now and with the fan speed locked at 59, temp's in the 70's. Locked at 56, so far still the 70's... higher 70's but yea.

Hmmm, maybe the card just needed some breaking in? Maybe I misremembered the temps earlier? I'm hopeful I can keep this particular card.

Clock speed is only 880 though, which it defaulted to. Am I a total sucker fool if I don't crank that up? Would like to know what you have yours set to

I'd like to know a test I can run on this thing to really conclusively get to the bottom of whether this card is in need of an RMA.

Any suggestions on a specific game, clock speed, fan speed to try to know for sure from?

Here is a picture of my MSI Afterburner, right after a cold boot.

I ran Operation Sword breaker on BF3 - Maxed out @ 65C @ 46% fan speed.

I have had success overclocking my card to 1050/1450 on stock voltage. I leave the fan speed on auto as well. I see temps in the 70's with these clocks.
