Just got an LCD: any recommendations for things to test ghosting on it?

Well, I decided to get this LCD which supposedly has these specs, according to some info I read on a board.

Now, they claim 16ms refresh, which is excellent, but how do I test that out aside from watching some movies on my PC or playing some games? Anything (files, clips, etc) really nice to test with? Thanks.

Hmm, cool, I'll check it out.

I did notice one thing. When I scroll web pages very slowly, the text seems to "drag."

Odd, very odd. My old tube has more ghosting than my new LCD, but the text on web pages drag when I have the page autoscroll down (using the center wheel button on the mouse). 😕

You shouldn't need to "test" for ghosting. Why MAKE yourself see it if you don't have to? Play your games and be happy if you can't see it... Yeesh.

Lol, just testing around with the monitor. I got it from Circuit City, so I can bring it back within 30 days if I'm not satisfied in any manner 🙂

I guess the simplest way would be to drap a light window around a dark background, or vice versa. But really you should only focus on looking for blurring in the apps you use, be they games or movies. I think text blur is going to happen with any LCD, but maybe disabling smooth scrolling with lessen the effect.

Just play some fast paced FPS games like Q3,UT2003 etc, your eyes will soon tell you if you see ghosting or not,and as a gamer that`s the real only way to find out 😉.Even if you do see ghosting it may be slight and most people can live with that.

Open up Solitaire and drag the mouse around against the green background

Soltaire will show ghosting but most people don`t play it much compared to FPS games,I`ve not played solitare for years on my LCD but play FPS games all the time.

OK, but it's much easier to load up Solitaire than it is to load up a bunch of games--if you're only purpose is to detect blur, period, rather than to detect it in the apps you use.

Pete I see your point, but as a gamer you would be more worried by ghosting in real games that you would play like Q3,UT etc rather then Solitaire, remember some games show more ghosting then others and to get an accurate reading you would need to judge the ghosting if any on the games you would play as a reference, after all that`s what really counts.

But yes Solitaire is a quick way of showing it,happy now 😉.

🙂

well it is not like your pixel refresh is going to be any different in 3d apps than it is in solitare. however, judgeing by Ionizer86 comment that his old crt had more ghosting, i don't think he understands what ghosting is.

Yes but it really depends on the game,I can play Lionheart,Diablo etc all day with zero ghosting(to my eyes at least) but if I switch to TFC,UT etc I can see very slight ghosting in the fast sections of the game when I look for it, so testing it on games you would play is important.I`m lucky that the games I play that are fast FPS don`t show much ghosting and other games I play are the slower Diablo,Deus Ex type games.

🙂

Btw I would recommend where possible you buy a LCD that has DVI connection since it does show better image quality compared to analogue mode, you would need to have a video card that has DVI support but it`s worth it IMHO,besides most people upgrade their video card before their LCD/monitor and most video cards now have DVI support.

While its not going to have a different pixel refresh in anything he should keep in mind that solitaire is a pretty brutal test. Mainly just because its two colors moving against each other so its very easy to see. I only mentioned it since its a very easy way to see what it is.

Lol, I guess that's kind of where I am. My monitor supposedly has 16ms response time, but I'm not sure because I bought a cheap off-brand LCD which supposedly has the specs I linked. I guess I'm trying to see what ghosting would look like so I'll be convinced that my monitor doesn't ghost a lot.

As for my CRT "ghosting" more, I'm saying that in Monitor Calibrator, the trail that the moving white box makes is much longer. Not that CRT's actually "ghost" for that matter 🙂

<--LCD noob. Just got one but doesn't know how to judge quality aside from looking at specs 😉

hu sounds like your crt was on its way out as they shouldn't have that problem at all.

for ghosting on your lcd, it is simply an issue of all those little lights which make up your screen needing time to change their brightness. as things move across your screen the image of where things were will still be fadeing away while the monitor is still adjusting to display the present location. some peoples eyes are more sensitive to this than others, so if it doesn't bother you then i wouldn't worry about it.

Ya, my CRT was about to die (it'd start randomly vibrating like crazy every once in a while) so I got this LCD. It seems that in 3D, I don't really notice anything, and that the only obvious places are when I shake the card around in solitaire and when I scroll web pages uber slowly.

Seems like this LCD is a keeper.
