Just got an Apple TV yesterday

So should I buy an ATV? My monitor does not have HDMI port so will HDMI adaptor to DVI/VGA port work?

HDMI is basically DVI with integrated audio. The two are electrically compatible and you just need a simple DVI to HDMI cable. You can get those cheap off Monoprice. You will need a receiver with a TOSLINK input, or a TOSLINK DAC to get audio though. The iOS based AppleTVs don't have analogue audio outputs.

If you don't need audio, you'll be fine with just an HDMI to DVI adapter.

It's an add on device, just an actual TV. It's an iOS appliance.
