Just got an 850MHZ MMC2 processor off ebay...

And I'm having some issues. The laptop I'm using is a Sony Vaio PCG F480, it came with a 600MHZ PIII processor with speedstep, which goes to 500mhz on battery. The processor installed perfectly and runs fine, in a way.. At first when I loaded up the system, it detected it as a 1GHZ processor (1000mhz) and loaded up.

But when I ran CPUZ, it said it was 700mhz, at first I thought I got ripped but then realized it was the speedstep speed when it's running off batteries. So I've tried two things, changing the setting in the bios to peformance mode and doesn't really do much so I then installed intel's speedstep program and when I switched to performance mode, the system locks up. The laptop comes with a speedstep like program which can select performance modes, it too locks up the machine when selecting performance mode. So I'm wondering, what I should do about this and what is causing it to do this?

Did you check the marking on the actual CPU before you put it in?

seems like CPU isn't capable of handling maximum load.

your first clue will be on the markings of CPU.

Check the markings like larciel said, if it is an 850mhz processor but is attempting to run at 1ghz it will more than likely not be stable. Check the FSB settings on both your 600mhz and the 850mhz, even though it is a faster processor if it was meant to run on a lower FSB than your bios is trying to run it at then it would cause the exact problems described.

Try switching the battery saving mode in power options to always on when connected via the mains. This should prevent speedstep from kicking in on most laptops, and then run CPU-Z to check the speed

Well when running at 700MHZ the FSB is at 100MHZ, the processor is an MMC2 socket processor so it's obviously not going to be running faster than 100mhz. When I didn't fiddle with speedstep at all and had it on automatic in the bios, the processor would still choose to run at the 700mhz speed...

When I boot into safe mode and load CPUZ, it says that the processor is 700mhz...

tell him that he either sent you a defunk processor or a processor that didn't match what he claimed to be selling you and get your money back.

Crap, well I'm not sure what to think at the moment, I just told the laptop to run at full performance mode and I ran a linux distro and still ran at 700mhz. I'm worried now because when I turn on the laptop, I can't hear the fan spin up anymore and I'm not sure if it's because it died or because it wont spin up since it's not running hot enough...
