I got pulled over for not making a right turn signal, but I didn't use it because a few days earlier the bulb blew out and I didn't have time to change it. Of course when he told me to try it again, it magically works. Then he saw that my registration sticker has expired. I've spend close to $400 to pass the smog and I keep failing because California law says the station can't tell the owner what is the problem (wtf?). Then of course I forgot my insurance card.

In the end I was cited for the expired sticker and no proof of insurance. Looks like I'm going to have to take a cash advance on my credit card to try and pass smog again. As for the proof of insurance, I'm hoping they'll drop that when I show proof at court that I do have insurance. I was wondering though, does anyone know how much of a fine is the expired registration sticker?

Doesn't it tell you what the fine is on the ticket, or on a piece of paper they gave you with the ticket?

Just out of curiousity... why the username dvdrdiscs?

How so? He was just doing his job.

Generally speaking, alot of tickets are given out to meet a quota. AKA for money. 55 in a 45 when everyone else is going 55 as well does not deserve a ticket. Neither does going 60 in a 55 at night with no one on the road. Most tickets are bs. The people that speed dangerously rarely get caught. And instead of cops actually taking care of crime most of them are out setting up lame speed traps to cause problems for everyday citizens that cause no actual harm.

yeah i dont blame the cop. he could have called a tow truck and took my car away which would have completely f*cked me over. on top of that he could have also cited me for the turn signal.

i didnt make this thread to rant about the cop. I just want to know what kind of fines i should be expecting. i'm already having trouble making rent :(

little tip, if you fail smog it's because there's something wrong with your car. it sounds like you keep getting it tested hoping that it will magically fix itself. tho it does appear that your car has special powers due to its healing of the turn signal.

You dont take care of yourself (no insurance card, expired registration and not using turn signal), I have no symathy for you.

A blown light bulb doesn't fix itself. It's physically impossible for such an event to happen. Sounds like something erratic with the switch.

Thanks for the awesome tip! But I did spend money trying to replace parts and having it retested. I thought that would have been pretty obvious.

Believe it or not, people have real world problems. I'm a full time student who only makes $600 a month and barely getting by on financial aide. I wish I had to money to fix all of my problems but I don't. I'm not asking for nor do I care for your sympathy.

Yeah I guess I will have to check that out. When I turned on the signal, the indicator would blink really quick. When I went out to check the back, the lights didn't come on. I assumed that the reason the indicator blinked really quick was because the bulb blew. Now I know although it's a bit too late.

Last year my wife got a ticket for her tags being more than a year expired. The fine was $161, this is CA, but after she got the tags the fine was waived.

Your turn signal problem is the blinker unit. Go to AutoZone and tell them you need a blinker unit and ask them to change it for you.

As to passing the emissions test, the guy go I to suggests what I should do/change/repair in order to pass the test. I don't understand why people have problems with this.

What's up with CA? In OR and WA, if you fail smog they waive the fee and give you a detailed breakdown of the analysis so you can find out and fix whatever is wrong. You only pay the fee (about $21) if you pass. Does CA not want people to find out what is wrong with their cars so they can fix it? Or do they want to keep dinging people for inspection fees and tag fees?

Cause they are out to make money or just plain incompetent.

This summer I had to do emissions, took it to the garage just down the street from me. First they fail me for the CEL light not coming on (quick run to autozone for a $1 bulb, they wanted $80 to look at it), then they fail my cause emissions are too high. Turns out they hadn't let the car warm up enough since it had been sitting in their lot for a couple of hours and they just idled it for a few minutes, I took it to a different place later that day cause I was pretty certain there was no problem with my car, passed with flying colors.
