Just got a test back I was pretty sure I failed.

For Fscks sake, I hate curves in college. How does knowing 35% of the material say you're good at anything!?

Because professors are as aware as anyone that you are not going to remember and need 90% of what you ever learn, and what is important is that amongst a class of your peers, you did better than they did.

in what class

Pharmacology.

So what you mean to say is that you DID fail the test, and the professor doesn't think that it's necessary to know what you're doing? I'm thinking that when working with medicine, it would probably be a very idea to know more than 35% of the material.

I'm sorry, but this is ridiculous.

Oh nice, so none of them know what they're doing? As long as its the norm...

Well 45% is one big-ass curve... I think its a little ridiculous TBH. You're studying medicine, I think it would be beneficial to all if you knew more than 35% of the material.

The facts and stuff you remember from a book will only be so useful, and if they are ever needed for real, they can be learned/relearned. What will be useful is people knowing that amongst people who are already considered to be smart, you are smarter than they are.

You learn what you need to REALLY learn on the job.

QFT.

Curving like... an 85% into a low 90's to make for an A is one thing... curving a grade where one out of three questions was right into passing is scary.

That statement holds true for foodservice and retail, and other unskilled labor, but not in a job where you create a medicinal substance for distribution.

I know I failed my final exam and did, yet still ended up with a >55% average in the course 😀

Did I mention I got ~33% on the midterm as well? 😀 😀

What's more, every good test has new material and is an exercise in application of what the test taker has learned. Big curves are good, IMO: they separate the men from the boys and the women from the girls. (+45/100 is a bit much, though.)

Anyhow, I don't believe in curving exams. Rather, I tend to curve an entire semester's work on the whole.

Doesn't matter....the point of education is lost now. Everything is about grades. It's no longer about discovering the material. All schools care about is the retention rate and the job placement rate.
