Just got a Samsung 971P, black line through the center

I just got a brand new Samsung SyncMaster 971P LCD monitor from my parents, and when I hooked it up, everything seems fine except for the fact that there is a dark line going horizontally through the center of the screen. It is lighter when there is a white background, but it is still present.

Is this going to be a hardware issue, or a software issue that I can resolve, or what? Any help would be appreciated.

you might try changing refresh rates, getting new drivers, changing resolution size, etc... but it sounds like a hardware issue...

Classic symptom of No Vertical Deflection .. since it is a Monitor, first thing I would try is
checking the Vertical Rate is correct .. usually at 60-80HZ for most monitors

Next, I would try the Monitor on a computer that you know has working Video
If it works ok there, the monitor is fine and you have either a bad Video Card or
an improper setting on your system video

If it does not work on the good pc, the monitor is defective and needs servicing

The refresh rate is at 60hz...don't know where to get to the "Vertical Rate"?

And I had a CRT monitor hooked up to this computer before today. It worked fine, so I really don't think it's the video card.

So if it's not this vertical rate, it's defective? How do I get to vertical rate?

The refresh rate is the Vertical Rate ... 60HZ is good for a setting
Next step is to test the Monitor on another computer
That will isolate the trouble to either the Monitor or the Video Card

Like bruceb said, try it on another computer, if it doesn't have the issue on another computer and your computer runs other monitors fine then perhaps it's an incompatibility between your vid card and the monitor.

It sounds like the monitor has the issue though. Prob should get it returned or exchanged.

Well, if I disconnect the monitor from the computer, and turn it on, the "Check Signal Cable" box that floats around on the screen gets the same black line through it whenever passing through the center, so I'm pretty sure it's the monitor. I guess I'll just send it back.
