Why are you looking for something so powerful? You do realize that the smaller bikes like the 250R will be faster than most cars on the road?

Because its a big boy bike.. I like being thrown in at the deep end.. Although in this case i agree it may not be such a good idea.. Mostly i think it just looks far better than the smaller engined bikes, fatter tyres, bulkier frame etc, i'd dwarf a smaller bike lol.

QFT. While my first bike wasn't old (a 2001 Ninja 500R bought in 2002), it was much cheaper than going new (read: 1/2 the cost), and so I was able to pay for it in full on the day of purchase.

When I called around to a few different insurance companies, the quotes I got seemed to fall in the ~$3000/year range for full coverage, and ~$250/year for liability. I was 22 at the time, so I had a few years on you, but I also had a few speeding tickets on my record.

Beyond that, take it from a guy who learned to ride on a Ducati 900SS--pick something cheap and small (displacement-wise) for your first motorcycle. You WILL make mistakes, and even a 600cc engine is going to be much more unforgiving than would a 500 or a 250...especially if said 600 is a sport bike.

It doesn't matter if you kill anyone else. They'll have to pay your medical bills

Cruisers FTW!!

And when I want outrageous speed, I take out my brother's Ninja 600 .. and he gets to pay the insurance.

Heh, I have about the same situation. 1100 Shadow A.C.E. Tour is $130 a year. Being 32, and nothing on my record helps though. I have a friend who has a nice Buell that lets me ride whenever I want, if I want to go hug corners.

That seems pretty par for the course, especially in Europe, considering it's 600cc, you're 18 and it's a crotch rocket. That bike might even be blacklisted at such a high cost.

Don't forget, SOME insurers actually factor in driving experience or how long you've held a driver's license. Makes sense since your intuition and knowledge of how other drivers will react are very important. Think most people start getting breaks around 25. Hoping to get my license (non-temp) about a year from now, and still preparing to be raped on a Ninja 250.

What do you mean "some"? I'd sure as hell like to know which don't, this way I don't have to pay $2400/year for insurance on a dinky Escort.

"Some" was used to cover my as* in case someone (like you) would find one that didn't... Guess it backfired:).

A GSXR is a handful, and it will kill in a second if you're not ready. Get experience on a bike you can pay cash for so you can get liability only insurance.

Europe should have something like the Motorcycle Safety Course (includes hands on riding) in the US. Take the course before you buy a bike. It will likely keep you alive in the first two weeks of riding. The course may also lower your insurance, but take the course (pay if necessary) to stay alive.

One last thing ... take the course.

EDIT:
My reply was to the May posts. I see my comments were already covered. The new software had clipped off the pages 1,2 indicator.

if you pay it off, you don't need to buy collision. I did the same thing (mine was about 5k/year at 22 and I was like, no way) when I got my CBR 600RR and it only cost me 250/year after I paid it off.

Doesn't work like that here...
