Hey guys...

I got a old cheap 3 button mouse on my compaq laptop running win2k. So tonight i went over to office depot and picked up a new Intelli Explorer optical mouse, it has 5 buttons, and the sticker on teh box that says its hte latest generation and 33% more accurate, blah blah blah.

Anyways, as soon as i got it, i unplugged my old mouse nad plugged in my new one (ps2 port). Voila, it worked right outta the box, no probs moving it around, wheel worked fine etc...But i wanted the 4th and 5th buttons to work so i can make them go back and forward in IE while web browsing.

So i popped in the CD that came with, ver 3.2
Rebooted the PC, and i clicked on the new mouse icon in the task tray. It shows button support for only 3 buttons though, and the list of mice in the drop down menu does not include mine nor any 5 button mice, its all of they older MS mice.

So, I uninstalled that, and went to microsoft.com/intellipoint and got the latest 4.x drivers. Installed those, and when you reboot and come back in, you have a lil "welcome to intellipoint mouse setup" thingy and walks you through 9 steps in this lil window.

In that window I COULD Choose my mouse, it was listed there, and it even showed the 5 buttons, but it was just a lil demo window. So i clicked on the newer 4.0 mouse incon in the lower right task trey, and choose properties and looked at the button page.

Again, no support for my mouse. It IS DIFFERENT looking than the 3.2 ver button page, but it sitll lists the same old stupid useless mice.

I CAN NOT BIND ANY COMMANDS TO MY 4th and 5th BUTTONS.... the button page still only shows 3 buttons, left right wheel/middle

argh..

any ideas?

I tried going USB, but i just couldn't seem to get it to work effectivly. Right now i bound the BACKSPACE key (back in IE) to the wheel button... but when im scrolling down a page sometimes i press to hard and it goes back a page. heh.

Under device drivers it lists the mouse as: Microsoft PS/2 port mouse (intellipoint)

Driver Provider: Microsoft
Driver Date: 8/22/2001
Driver Version: 4.0.0.657

Its on IRQ 12 with no conflicts.

Driver Files:
c:\winnt\system32\drivers\i8042prt.sys
c:\winnt\system32\drivers\ipfilter.sys
c:\winnt\system32\dirvers\mouclass.sys
File VErsion 5.00.2195.2936

Works fine under WinXP, PS2 connector. Is your particular model pictured in Control Panel/Mouse/Buttons/Connected Device? Try "restore default" and reboot, then adjust button settings.
