just got a new mountain bike

was on sale at the local sportsmart, for 299 and I had an extra 25% off coupon,
so 243 out the door and it rocks.

The iDrive isn't that hot (IMHO, like I posted in your thread), but it's better than this bike. I really don't like Mongoose bikes though. Their bikes used to be good, but now they're just another department-store bike.

Full suspension is really not a good idea for cheap bikes.

I'm not sure what I'm looking for, frame and components are important.

If I were smart I'd get a hybrid since most of my riding is on city streets with the occasional trail.

aack! stay away from the hybrids!! they don't do anything well (IMO)... i am a big fan of canondales.. a f400 would be a nice bike for trail riding and some city riding. if you do most of your riding in the city, have you considered a road bike?

Ross, it's a great commuter. Works great for light trail riding as well; you just have to be really good with how you ride.

As far as road bikes, I've been looking at the Trek "c" series. The "c" stands for comfort, they provide for a more upright riding position for us older folk. Linky

Entity, you need a longer front brake housing. I don't like how it's coming into the cable hanger at an angle like that :Q Also, there appears to be a body in the background. You better get that taken care of before the Mrs. gets home.

kermalou, the Mongoose line isn't... how can I word this nicely... "enthusiast-quality" anymore. But I'll give you a piece of good advice: take your new ride to a reputable bike shop and have them do a tune-up on it. It'll work better, for longer, and with less maintenance down the road (or trail) after it's been tuned by someone who isn't paid $5 per bike to slap them together AFAP.

Nice bike dude!

The front derailer just froze on my 7 year old Giant Yukon last week... I replaced the shifters, brakes, tires and all kinds of other parts in the fall... I haven't looked at even the possibility of a new bike in years.

How long to these 150$ Wal-Mart Mongooses last? I think I need suspension now considering some of the falls I take on the way to work... 10-18 inch curbs in some spots

Gotta be able to handle snow, ice, mud, rain... just about anything except good weather when I drive, and be as worry free as possible... thoughts?

Very very true!

If I were you, I would take that back and buy a hard tail at a Bike Shop. If you were to spend the same amount on a hard tail as you spent on a F/S bike, you would end up with 10X the bike!
