Just got a new main SETI rig, questions

Hey guys. I really don't post here much at all... but anyway, I wanted to know if my numbers are on target for my new rig among other things. Some of these questions should probably go into Overclocking, but I figured it would be ok here since they relate to my SETI performance. I just got a 2100+ tbred, EPoX 8RDA+, and a SLK-800. My mushkin basic pc2100 doesn't even want to do 135 fsb, so I just stuck with multipliers to overclock.

I'm running 16.5 x 133 = 2205 Mhz according to Motherboard Monitor.

This is my first time overclocking. I have a few questions.

1. I'm running at 1.75 VCore on this thing, my goal is to have 2.2 Ghz on this thing, which I've had stable at 1.75 VCore, anything lower than that and I get trouble. Is 1.75 ok on the tbreds? I haven't been keeping up on the current news being in college and all.

2. I'm running anywhere between 35C and 41C full load. Will my overvolting on my processor only be hazardous if my temps go up, or is damage due to overvoltage independent of heat?

3. My work unit time in my CLI version is about 2 hours 45 minutes or so... That's reduced from 3 hours and 50 minutes I was getting with my 1800+. Is that a good time for my overclock? I'm not much of an authority on these things and I want to make sure I'm on track.

Other personal SETI news in case you guys care:

Currently I have my girlfriend's 1800+ and this new rig running 24/7
I'm about to get a friend's 2.26 Pentium 4 to join tomorrow if all goes well
I have plans to make a secondary SETI rig out of the mb and processor I upgraded in my main rig.

It seems kinda hopeless, but I really want to try to beat this guy from my registration class who's in first place

His comment in his background of his user profile annoys me. Too bad he has four times as many work units as I do and he's pulling away on top of that.... oh well.

Each chip has its own overclocking capabilities. But you have seemed to have done a good job.

I have the same motherboard minus the + (didn't need all the bells and whistles 😉 ).

I have yet to overclock my rig ... should be getting around to that soon. I have an unlocked 2400+ in mine. A buddy of mine with the same board as you is using the max vCore he can get on his and has turned in the 3rd fastest Seti Benchmark WU ever. He and I are using Corsair XMS 3500 and really good coolers.

We sure would like to have you Join our Seti TeAm. 🙂

Wow, 2.2 VCore is pretty insane, even I know that heh. Hope he has a nice watercooling set up on that, or better.

I'm already on the Anandtech SETI team by the way as "Sean McLaughlin and Dawn Sulok" Here

We're in 383rd place on the team right now, but we've been moving up pretty consistently.

Thanks for the response.

Thats a nice setup Sean 🙂

If your running 1.75 and 41C under load that cpu will last for years and years. Ive yet had a cpu die from heat or overvolting, but i guess it can happen 🙂

Thanks for the info lane42, I've heard some horror stories, but the details have been lacking in many cases.

I got that 2.26 Pentium 4 set up with the CLI client about 20 minutes ago. With any luck I might be able to get a few more people in my dorm to join me too.

Very nice WU times there! Have you tried lowering the mult and raising the FSB? You can lock (or it is locked) the PCI and AGP so you could get some screaming FSB out of that. I have read people getting up to 210+ FSB with quality ram!

you might wanna use seti hide on people's computers you get the ok to use. Seti's the first thing that get's blamed for when something goes wrong and off it goes. Seti Hide is Set and Forget 😀

Sorry I didn't recognize your name. 😱

So Sean McLaughlin and Dawn Sulok on the Seti TeAm Roster = YOyoYOhowsDAjello on the AT Forums. 🙂

Got it. 😀

I don't know about using SETI hide. I've never really heard of it before, but I'm assuming that it just lets SETI run in the background but doesn't show up in the icon area in the lower right... i don't remember what that's really called.

I wish I could push the fsb on this thing (since pci is locked), but my ram just wont have it. It's mushkin basic pc2100. I couldn't even get 135 fsb stable at default voltage. I didn't try going at a higher vdimm just because I was pretty satisfied with my overclock on multiplier alone, and it seems stable to me. I ran prime95 for a few hours and didn't get any errors. I probably should have run it longer to make sure, but the state it's in now is stable enough for me.

I was able to get turbo timings out of my ram last night though. I'm at 2-2-2-5. I don't know what this ram is rated to do, but once again, prime95 ran stable for a couple hours to test, so I'm going to stick with turbo. I think that shaved 5 minutes of my time now, as the last two both took 2 hours 40 minutes.

Right now I have a unit 75% done and the estimated completion is 2 hours 22 minutes. I ususally get about 10 minutes faster than what it says at the 75% point when it's completed.

I'm amazed how much my times have improved.

Wow, nice temps, I have custom rigged hsf and 4 80mm case fans and my Palimino 1700+@12.5mult*141fsb runs a hare over 50C.

Decent time with your oc faster memory would give you about 5-10min. shorter wu's though, I'm hitting an average of 3hr5min. on my rig with 1GB kingston pc2700 no oc on mem with cl2.5 max settings on the memory controller on my msi kt4vl.

and w/seti a lower multiplyer and faster fsb tend to have better results at the same end frequency.

Nice rig you have there 😀

Btw signifcant shortening of CPU life usually only comes about as a result of very high CPU voltages (well over +10%) &/or very high cpu temps.

I'm running my XP1600 @ 12x147=1767MHz 🙂 @ 1.8v ,it seems to run fairly hot but these Asus mbrds tend to be a bit Genorous on cpu temps reading😉 ,currently its quite hot in here so I ve got case temps of 28C & cpu temps of 59C!.
Oh yeah & it does average WU's in about 3hrs 10mins ,though I know it'll do them in 3hrs 5mins at 11.5x152MHz=1750MHz but that mulitplier isn't working atm.
When it is I shall drop down to 1.75GHz as I can also lower the cpu vcore too🙂

Don't worry about your vcore ... it's okay! 1.75V is fine... so far i've only heard of one person burn out their tbred B but they were running at 1.95V... you're way below... i think you'll be fine...

i have my 2100+ running at 2350 @ 1.75V

🙂
