I want to transfer all my files onto my new 30gb HD, i have a 9gb now. But this 9gb has win98se on it and i want to do a fresh install of winME on the new 30gb and still have all of my original settings (like passwords, emails, etc.) on it. How would I do this?

Yeah used to do it all the time in win98. Sometimes you get a problem file or two, but just write the names down and do them having booted to DOS.
You can't just use DOS for most stuff because you'll lose your long filenames.

Any particular reason you gotta have ME? If so, backup your Windows directory somewhere, then install over it. If you want to play the game of finding and replacing ini files and password lists you're in for a looooong undertaking. There are just way too many to list...

Uh!!! I want WinME on this new HD tough and my old configurations from his win98se HD to be on that one. Is this possible?
Does Ghost allow me to have WinME on the new HD and transfer all these files onto that WinME HD from this Win98 HD?

What you could do is remove the 9 gig, install WinME on the 30 gig, then put the 9 gig as a slave to the 30 gig, and transfer the files you wanted. If that's not good enough, copy every file from your 9 gig to your 30 gig, then install ME over 98 if possible.

Hmmm, this sounds like a plan: Ghost the old drive to the new. Make the new drive the master and take the old drive out of there. That gives you a nice backup.
Install ME over Win98. If that goes well, you're done. If not, you still have the backup safe and sound. Then you have a very tedious job ahead of you and no clear directions.

If I ghost it, will it bring all the bad sectors and problems that plagued my old drive to the new drive?
Bad sectors... no. Flaky software configuration... yeah. Uninstall the crap from it. Strip it via Control Panel, Add/Remove Programs, Windows Setup. Just leave the mail, DUN and other important stuff in there. Reinstall Win98SE if needed.
You might also want to try a Registry cleaner. Get it all nice and stable before backing it up and installing over it. Believe me, that's a lot easier way to do it than the alternative. This is something everybody ought to strive to learn. Reformatting and starting from scratch every few months is way lame! Uh, moving on to WindowsME for no good reason isn't exactly the brightest move either...

There comes a point in time when trying to save certain files, emails, etc creates more trouble than it's worth. When I'm set to format, I select all the emails I have saved, and forward them to myself then close Outlook. I can then format, reinstall and go check my mail, there are all those emails waiting for me.
In your case, why not just remove the 9 gig, fdisk/format the 30 gig, do a clean install of ME, then add the 9 gig as a slave. You can then move any files you need over to the 30. Yeah, you'll have to re-enter passwords, that's why I use the same one for all my BBS type stuff! I really think you'll be happier with a clean install of ME rather than an upgrade over old 98.

instead of using ghost, get a little program called filecopy from www.compucheap.com (Russ's website.)

set up the 30gig as a slave to your 9 gig, partition and format and then run filecopy in WINDOWS.
i just have copied my 5.1Gb to an 18Gb hard drive using filecopy and added another partition for win2k.
Once your 30gig has your current copy of winSE, make it the master and remove your 9gig hard drive and also remember to make this drive active so you can boot from it. (use fdisk).
then upgrade to winME.
if things go bad, you still have your original 9Gig hard drive with everything they way it is right now. do not touch this drive untill everything is absolutely setup on the new drive.
just follow the commands in file copy and take tyour time and you will be fine.

Jesus, don't take that status to mean jack shi... That was a gift from the gods as far as I'm concerned, for no good reason that I can discern!
But I'm very serious about keeping a good backup on that small drive. Don't screw with that after you copy it to the new drive. Do all the messing around with the data on the new drive after it's copied over. I'll sleep better that way!
