Just got a new Dell 1704FPT, and I'm Lovin' It.

So I finally decided I needed to replace my 7 year old Sony trinitron (17"), and ordered a Dell 1704FPT for 185$ last friday. The 19" is too big for my taste, and afterall, 7 *is* the most magical number.

It was delivered last evening, and if it didn't clearly say 17" on it, I swear I'd have thought Dell sent me a 19" by mistake. The panel is HUGE. So much bigger than my CRT. And it has no deadpixels at all. Hurray!

Text and display is nice and clear and the unit itself is very good looking. Haven't tried any games on it yet, but I'm sure the 12ms response time won't disappoint.

Got mine in yesterday too.

Same as you - not a single dead pixel, and the thing is damned gigantic. I don't know how I ever functioned without it now.

This is the problem with monitors - you can't go in reverse. Once you go up, you're stuck there. If you go back down, you feel cramped, constrained, and (in games) blind.

I took advantage of the same deal to buy a new monitor for my dad. But I just realized that DELL sells both the 1704FPV and 1704FPT, and I'm trying to figure out which is better. The FPV costs like $15 more, has a higher contrast ratio (1:1000 vs. 1:500), but has a lower response time (25ms vs. 12ms).

FPT. I'd rather have half response time than more contrast, once you get above 400:1. Believe me, the 1704 does NOT have any trouble with contrast. It's as sharp as any other LCD.

Your 17" CRT had a viewable area of 15.9" or so. So your new 17" LCD is a full 1.1" bigger diagonally :)

Are these CrystalView, or ClearView, or MVA (which what is really is) or whatever the heck Dell calls it? I'm waitting for a MVA Dell LCD before I pick up one.

Actually, many of them are barely over 15" viewable area. He could be well at 2" larger.

I debated on that for a while too. But the contrast really isn't that big an issue. Like Insomniak said, the reduction (more than halved) in response time is well worth the 15$ you don't pay. If that makes sense in any way...
