Some of you may remember a thread I posted about 2 months ago about getting a new (used) convertible sports car. A few of you (Skoorb) tried to talk me down (and I appreciate that) but I caved yesterday. I traded in my V6 Mustang for a Black Nissan 350z with the tiptronic auto transmission. It's the enthusiast model so it had a few upgrades. Leather seats, upgraded bose systems, etc...

Last night when I bought it I was excited, but a bit sad to give up my Mustang (it was legend lime and the first car I really bought myself). After tonight, driving with the top down in sunny Florida and using the tiptronic transmission, I'm in love. The tiptronic is a great mix of having the control of a manual whilst the convince of an auto when you need it. Sure, its a little slower than a manual, but the difference is minimal enough to me that its outweighed by the convince when I'm city driving. The car itself is much faster than I had expected. It sounds wonderful and driving the top down is the best feeling in the world!

I'm not a huge car nut, but I'm definitely getting into them a lot more than I was a few years ago. I may do some simple modifications to it down the road. The one thing I def. want to do is get some sort of LCD screen with audio/visual controls. I'm not entirely sure what I want, but there is a really nice open space on the console with a spot for a good 8" LCD. Maybe some sort of satellite radio hookup or something? If anyone has any suggestions let me know.

I'll update this thread with some pictures tomorrow, its to late and I just got home from work so I can't take any right now.

congrats, but i've got to say the 350z roadster is well recognized as one of the ugliest roadsters out there

lol, I think its a great looking car. To each his own.

Oh by the way, I test drove a 2010 Miata, 2003 Z4, 2008 Saturn Sky, Toyota MR2, Mustang Vert and seriously considered an S2000 and even 2001 Porsche Boxster. Porsche was to expensive (maintenance) S2000 didn't look good enough to me, especially the interior. I really disliked the Z4's interior. Miata looked good inside, but was to slow. Sky drove like shit and MR2 looks really cool but had no performance. The 350 was a really nice blend of looks, performance and interior luxury quality (relatively speaking). I really don't see what other car I could have gone for, given my criteria. But.. as I said, to each his own!

more power to you, i've certainly owned my share of cars consider ugly:
05 z4 (flame surfacing)
08 boxster (rear end)

nothing quite like top down motoring

For an auto, the 350z is a better choice than the miata or s2k

Automatic + roadster = No soul for a sports car.

I own a miata and when I get the funds I'll get an S2000. Insurance is killer for that car (24 no accidents/tickets here) but the miata does everything I want right now just fine.
50 bucks a tire, 50 bucks a month full coverage insurance, 50 bucks for a set of brake rotors, sips regular gas at 29mpg...

yes its slow, but with all the money I save I can buy a turbo kit for it (the engine was originally from a turbo 323 from japan)

No love for the roadster ballmode? I'll agree that with the top up, the hardtop def. looks better than the roadster, but thats true of all 'verts. With the top down, I absolutely love the way the Z looks. As for Auto, from what I've been reading (and I'm not a car nut, yet) it seems like the performance difference is fairly negligible. With the ability to have fun with tiptronic it seems like the auto with tips is the best of both worlds. For me, it has plenty of soul 🙂

As for the Miata, a ton of people swear by them. I won't knock it, as I haven't owned one. I'll just say it wasn't for me. But for the price, like you said, it really doesn't have any competition. Its 20 grand cheaper than the Z and costs a lot less to maintain. It seems like a great car while staying on a budget.

If you want a roadster in that class of car, the S2000 is the only one to have. I've spent a lot of time driving a 350Z coupe and S2000. I could go on an on about why I prefer the S2000, but to each his own.

Well, you've got a Mustang V6 killer, and you'd probably give a lot of V8 Mustangs a run for their money.

Updated with some pictures. Ill try to take some better ones during the day tomorrow and some interior pictures. I need to get some sort of LCD screen to install in this big open area on the console.

Good stuff mate!

Think I made an alright deal? I'll admit, I'm probably not the best negotiator in the world. I was actually thinking about the sales process this afternoon and looking back on it, they did some confusing things. Ah well, its done now.

I love my '03 MR-S. Wouldn't trade it for anything. I like the interior SPACE versus the S2000. I have more room in the MR-S than the S2000. I've also driven a twin turbo 350z, and while it is fast, the interior feels even cheaper than my MR-S. 🙂

A friend of mine fitted one of the Pioneer all-in-one systems into that space if you want a MP3/GPS/BT all in one system with a decent (8"?) screen.

Any idea of a model #? I'm really not sure if I want to go with GPS/MP3/BT. Hell, Bluetooth would probably be pointless if I'm driving with the top down a lot, no? GPS I have on my phone... MP3 is useful but the car already comes with a 6 cd/mp3 player. It also has the controls on the steering wheel, so if I got the screen would it disable the controls on the steering wheel? The one thing I think would be cool is a touchscreen with an auxillary input so I can just hookup my phone to it and play my music off of there. Not really to sure what I'm talking about though 😛

Congrats on the purchase!

If you plan to modify it, I'd recommend just getting a plenum spacer (5/16" Motordyne is what I have and recommend). Its cheap ($200ish and easy to do yourself) and you'll get a decent gain. You won't get much out of anything else unless you start spending a ton of money.

For aftermarket head units I'd go with something by Pioneer. They make a Sirius satellite radio and steering wheel controller that is integrated and works very well.

Keep in mind that you might have to change out all your speakers if you go with an aftermarket HU. That Bose shit in your car now doesn't work well with aftermarket stuff.
