Just got a new 24" LED 1080p LG

UPS just dropped off my new LG 24" LED 1080p pc monitor and I thought I'd check out a DVD on it. The quality is nowhere as near as I expected it to be. I was expecting it to be just as good as our Blue-Ray player with the 42" LED LG we have in our living room. The reason why I choose the same movie to watch on my pc is because I wanted to compare the two; could it be the Blue Ray Player itself that is making my normal DVD look insanely good? It would seem logical but I am asking so I don't go out and buy a HDMI cable right away to see if its the cable.

Thanks

The blu ray player is probably upconverting your DVD.

This. There are some upconverting software programs like ffdshow you could look into to improve the quality of your DVDs (and blurays if you have a bluray reader...at least im pretty sure there is software like that, not positive)

Anytime you watch something in full screen the PC is upconverting it. It's probably using the easiest method using software so the picture may not be as good as a standalone player using better upconverting methods on using hardware.

Also a TV usually has more picture controls than computer monitors so you can adjust the picture to your viewing environment and personal preference.

What model number? If it's a TN panel LCD, colors won't look as good as your 42" TV, which usually use IPS or MVA.

Also, even if the BD player connected to your TV isn't upconverting it, the TV probably does a much better job scaling the DVD picture than the monitor. There's also the chance that you have a much larger viewing angle with your computer monitor than you do your TV. Use this calculator to figure out the viewing angle of your monitor and that of your TV. For example if you sit 2' from your 24" monitor, your viewing angle is 47.1°. If you sit 8' from your 42" TV, your viewing angle 21.6°. In this example, you'd be able to resolve more than twice the detail from your monitor as you can from your TV, making a low-resolution DVD look twice as bad.

Edit: A more-comparable viewing distance from the two would be 3' from the 24" and 5'3" from the 42".

At 3' from a 24", you should be able to resolve all the resolution of 1080p. This means that you'll even notice the resolution limitations of 720p, and obviously notice huge limitations for 480p. It would be like me watching a DVD on my 50" at 6' away. Even HD sometimes looks grainy at that distance because of either compression or the limitations of my 1366x768 resolution.

BTW, I was trying to say that DVDs probably look "good" on your 42" TV because you're likely much farther away from it than the 24". Try watching a DVD on your 42" TV at 5'3" away, which will be a comparable distance from your monitor. I bet the DVDs look like crap at that distance from your TV.

Now, you might be able to get DVDs to look better on your 24" monitor, but at 3' away, I don't think they'll ever look good.
