I just got a macbook pro yesterday. My brother has a new 24" imac and told me to download skype for a video chat.

Tried that out today and it was great. I know there is Skype Out but I never signed up for it. Tonight I log on and type in his phone number just for fun to see what would happen. I was expecting it to tell me no deal as I never put any money on it.

Next thing you know his phone rings and he answers it. I am not sure why it worked, but I find it odd. Is it free if he has the same area code?

OK I just tried it a second time and it tells me i have to purchase credit. Damn I thought I got through a loophole. At least it is cheap to buy.

Maybe it was because you were a new user you got a free call. But usually you have to pay for landline or cel phone calls.

Yeah, at what feels like twice the resolution and stability of Skype. You have to sign up for the .Mac free trial, iirc- your login will continue to work for iChat when the rest of the services expire.

Trust me- if you're video chatting with another Mac user, you'll want to. The video quality is night and day.

Well, it is also 10GB online storage, the back to my mac feature, web hosting... there are benefits to that $100/yr. But I am with you, I am not paying that.

heh, I already pay $35/yr for hosting plus a few domain names. If apple gave me more control, I'd contemplate going that route. Plus, I need more than 10GB if I want to backup. I still don't know if I should go w/ mozy.. such a good price and now backed by EMC.

Your user name is still active for iChat, even after your trial or subscription expires.

Oh, I understood that. I was just poking holes in .Mac for myself. It's not meant for people like me, heh
