Last month i got a ticket for speeding in a work zone in PA. Now days your license is automatically suspended if you speed in a work zone. I also have to go to a departmental hearing. Has anyone been to one of those???

Never gotten one of those, but 2 weeks isnt that bad. I mean I've had friends that had it suspended for 1-3 years so 2 weeks is a breeze.

Honestly, I would jsut keep driving for the two weeks and be careful to follow every traffic law. Flame me all you want, but I'd need to get to work.

it was a weird ticket. The turnpike is 65pmh, so i was cruising at 75mph, then i saw signs for work zone, merged with traffic, into one lane, then got pulled over at 71mph in a 40mph zone. Sucks... how will this affect my insurance? Any insurance agents here? This is a 5 point ticket. What the heck will that do to me?

Fortunately I have a very flexible work schedule that can work around other people, so i probably won't risk driving during my 2 weeks.

Was it on 81? I drove that about a week ago, I hear ya on the work thing, very few warning signs for the speed change, although I didn't see any cops.

The points systems of different states always confuse me, but I'm sure you'll have no problem with bowel movements for awhile.

That's my advice as well.

Your best bet is to fight it. Take it from me, I live in MI where there is no way out of a ticket unless you beat it in court. I have gotten 2 tickets in 10 years, and both of those I fought in court. One I beat cause the cop didn't show. The other I got marked down and my fee reduced. Still raised my insurance rates though. Amazing how a 1 point ticket does that.

For a 5 point ticket, that is just huge. I would fight that sucker. I may even get an attorney involved cause the insurance hike would be enough to justify one.

Don't forget to take into account all the cell-phone users and other inattentive drivers. No matter how careful you are, they have to hit someone.

I acctually did get a lawyer and fought it. The state trooper was an A$$. He was acctually standing out of his car when he supposidly said he clocked me. During the trial he said that his car was faced against the flow of traffic, and shot me with a radar gun mounted to the car. But i pulled a previous ticket that he wrote just 5 minute before mine. Unless he writes tickets in 5 minutes there is no way he could of been in the car. I thought i was going to win and so did my lawyer. But at the end of the day the Judge was like, "i don't think that this state trooper would lie to me in my own court house". "I find you guilty"

Am I the only one that thinks its fvcking asinine that the penalties for speeding in most states are now worse than those for wreckless driving? Maybe I'm just bitter about having my last ticket be 6 points and total $680 with the NY "Driver Responsibility Assessment" that gets added onto 6 point tickets with the new laws added last November. I think it's ridiculous for 20-29 over to be a 6 point ticket while running a red light, which is the #2 cause of accidents IIRC after distracted drivers, is only 3 points, driving on the wrong side of the road is only 3 points, and even wreckless driving is less than 20+ over at 5 points.

FYI, with another penalty that's been approved to go into effect soon for 100+ mph tickets (as a separate bill from the fine), 100 in a 65 will soon be a $2100+ ticket in NY. (and it's already 8 points)

A friend of mine got the statistics from Prudential that speeding is the #13 cause of accidents (out of 15 categorizations), and even then, "speed related" refers to speed for conditions, not speed vs. legal speed limit, meaning you go the speed limit on an icy road & wreck, or too fast for a curve, etc. It's also silly that the white speed limit signs which have nothing to do with safety have the legal bearing for speeding tickets, while the yellow speed signs that are telling you what to slow down to for a curve for safety have no legal bearing in most states.

Let me follow up by saying that during my college years, I recieved enough speeding tickets to get my license suspended for months at a time. I never stopped driving then, and honestly I never will unless they want to throw me in jail (which happens somewhere down the line).

I have a HUGE fvcking problem with traffic cops (i.e. the uniformed state-licensed extortionists).

It's unfortunate you didn't win your case in court, but I applaud you for fighting the charge anyways. Imagine if we could get 50% of the people ticketed to fight their case in court...the backlog of cases would extend for years. Unfortunately most people still like to bend over and take it in the butt from their local municipalities.

Luckily for me since I live in New York City I don't own a car any more, so I don't keep my own insurance. This was a rental car, so the insurance is an extra on the rental fee, which is the same amount regardless of driving record. Although I've heard if you have too much on your record within the last 3 years a lot of rental companies won't rent to you.

This was my first ticket since 1999 (and that one was in Ohio, which isn't one of the states reciprocating to NY), so it wasn't an automatic mandatory trial/suspension. 11 points or 3 tickets in 18 months is the border for that here.

because in some states all it takes is like 4 points in 12 months to get your license suspended for a lot longer than 2 weeks

Oh.. i checked, i'm good till i hit 6 points as far as suspensions go :). And when i hit it the first time i just have to go to traffic school. I never hit 6 yet and i don't plan on ever hitting it.

Thats fine and all, and this is not a flame job. Consider IF the OP does get caught in that two weeks (which is nothing) that the suspension will liklely be extended and he/she will find himself explaining to a judge in court, and not just a DMV hearing.
