Just got a letter from IRS saying that they owe me money.

They said that I overpaid on my 2001 tax return and they included a check for $90. In no way did I iniatiate this, and I do my own taxes so I didn't have an accountant review my taxes either.

IRS giving your money back, what is this world coming to?

I wonder if you have to report that as taxable income next year?

Yep. I got a check out of the blue last year, and my accountant specifically asked me if I received any money back.
I think it was like $100 but yeah, I had to report it.

$90? Sounds like a transcription (typo) error. Be glad it was in your favor! I'd still go back and double check my return from that year.

Transcription error example:

You wrote in $5340 instead of $5430 or something like that.

It's called a "refund" and it happens all the time. I'm getting just over $800 back this year but others in OT have talked about $2,000's back.

No, I already recieved my $900 this year. This was in addition to any other refund I recieved.

And to all those saying that it was a typo - I used turbotax and efile, so no chance of typos there.

My dad got a check from the IRS for $900 one time b/c they said he over paid. Two years later they came back to him and said they shouldn't have sent him that check and that he now owes the 900 they sent him + penalties! He ended up paying around $400 extra for their mistake. Now whenever he gets a check from the IRS, no matter the amount, he won't cash it! Beware of the scam!
