@ Elk Grove, CA. Starting in computer sales@$8.25. For now, its a part-time job for the holiday season. Afterwards, if they like me, I get a raise and promotion. Would like to get into the tech support dept.

Any tips/warnings from current/past BBY workers?

Its time to start scanning the weekly fliers before they're out and post everything you find in Hot Deals!

I worked at Best Buy while in college. It was OK. It was a fairly easy job. I worked in the Appliance dept, and later in Stereos. This was back in '94-'95, and I only made $5.85. What I disliked about it, was that they didn't train you on the products. (At least back then they didn't.) So you knew as much about the product as the guy asking about it. I just figured I was being paid to be a warm body who could do transactions.

I later quit and worked for Circuit City, and more than tripled my income. Circuit City paid commission! $$$!!! At first I was afraid of commission, but it sure beats hourly. Circuit City guaranteed $7.30/hour if your commission was low for a particular week. But hardly anyone had to take hourly pay. My Christmas paychecks were more than what I make now as an engineer for Intel! (Only those 2 checks per year) At Best Buy, I was bringing home paychecks of $350. At CC, my 2-week take-home was over $1000. Also, CC flew me to their headquarters in CA for a week for training. You didn't get that at Best Buy.

In the end, I made more at CC, but grew tired of commission sales. You end up pushing product that may not be better for the customer, but paid you more. So in summary, Best Buy is an easy job that doesn't pay much. Circuit City pays better, but you become a snake.

Lots of good info here.

Seriously, good luck and don't scam people (who through no fault of their own) don't know much about buying computers.

After 90 days, yes, you get a raise...........3%. After 1 year you're reviewed again........Possibly up to 10%.

Promotion to what? Senior Minimum Wage Employee?
I'm sure you would like to get into the tech support dept.............So does the rest of the PCHO dept.

I worked there for 3 years in Tech and PC Sales. I was offered a few jobs a Corp HQ. (None paid me as much as the Army does) If it's a parttime job for some extra $$$, it's alright. If it's your bread and butter, I'd suggest to find new employment and fast!

I expect to get a hiring decision from the AF around late Dec.; they won't let me ship out before March. I'm going to delay entry to Aug. in order to get married in May31.

I'm planning on staying in this job with BBY until then. Kinda need the $ to pay for the wedding.

Hey, $8.25/hr is pretty decent for PT work!! Congratulations. Unlike your slacker friends, you are to be commended for actually getting a J-O-B! I am happy for you. Really. :)

Now, some advice from an adult that shops at Best Buy on a weekly basis.

1. I don't want to buy a freakin' MSN dialup account, dammit!!!! Dont' come near me if you have one of those "Ask me about MSN!" stickers on your shirt b/c I will scream at you like a psychopathic maniac.

2. If I'm looking at hard drives or CDRWs, please don't say "so, you lookin' at buying a hard drive?" Go away, please; if I have a question, believe me, I will ask you. Until then.....shoo-fly.

3. When I'm looking at one of the PCs you sell, and you come over and you say "this Compaq comes with 256mb of RAM" and I answer "yes, but it's got a proprietary motherboard, an inadequate power supply and the onboard video causes corruption if you populate the AGP slot>" It should be obvious that I probably know more than you. At that point, please go away as anything you say after that will only annoy me.

4. If I tell you "I'm from AT." Shake my hand, exchange pleasantries/crack game site info and then go away.

Other than that, congratulations!!!! :)

Working in teh PC sales department during Thanksgiving and Christmas season sucks a big one. People are literally grabbing you because they are impatient and there are just tons of people. On the day after thanksgiving I sold 76 computers in a 10 hour period. That had to be one of the longest days of my life.

lol. :p

Raise and promotion? Did they tell you that? :p

The only way to get a "raise" is 30 cents after like 3 months of working (it's automatic), and the only other way is if they force you to change departments (because they are short). The only way to get a promotion is if you are full time, work there tons, and are willing to be a complete jack@ss and bug the sh1t out of people and having them buy the warranties and all the accessories.

Theres all different customers... theres the know it alls like MichaelD and then theres the dumb@sses. Your job is to figure out which type they are and how to approach them. Make sure to know where the bathroom is because you'll get that question a lot, and probably "Where are the digital cameras?". "Hmmm, maybe over there where ithe big sign says CAMERAS AND CAMCORDERS you fsckin retard!!!" :p

I've worked there for a year and a half. Basically the way the who place runs is you are the lowest life form as a prod. Above you are seniors and sups, above them are the managers. The managers and sups are not entirely on commission but they get bonuses for hitting certain goals. The managers get pressured from the district people, the sups and seniors get pressured from the managers, and then you get it from the sups and seniors. I usually did whatever they said while they were doing a CSE on me, but when i wasnt being watched i just told the truth to the customer. If your department is doing bad, the sup gets fired usually. Which is why it sucks to have a sup that you like. Other than that the pay sucks but the discount is cool. Also youll notice alot more people wanting to be your friend so you can get them stuff. :)

No Kidding, I ended up teaching the entire electronics staff one day the difference between interlaced and progressive output on DVD players. And if I get another offer to join Netflix one more time from the blue shirts, I swear I will go postal.

And MichaelD, I usually responded to your response with a "Then why are you even looking at the computers that are being sold here?"
