This is such a sweet instrument.

I went out and bought a Fernandez Retrorocket, wtih some "KUSTOM" 50W amp (I don't care, I'm playing without the amp anyways).

I'm trying to play Dream On by Aerosmith....using tabs of course 😛. Been sitting here for nearly 3-4 hours, and I'm getting that beginning part down. Haha, my hands are full of lines/engravings.

you look posessed in that picture. Anyway, dream on is a weird song to play. The beginning is easy, but then you get to some parts and its like woah.
 
Welcome aboard 🙂 Nothing I like more than seeing new people picking up an axe.

I took a look at the Fernandez Retrorocket as I've never heard of it before. Looks like it's a Fender Strat knockoff, but the price is right. It seems to have a bolt on neck which will require some care so it doesn't warp. Don't lean it against the wall when you're done playing- always put it back in the case or lay it flat on the ground.

I've been toying picking up one of these : Danelectro 56 The fretboard on them is huge and flat, making it great of beginners (lots of space between the strings) and the flat neck makes it a great slide player. Stupid music industry keeps making me want to spend my money :|

Cool - I don't exactly have big fingers, but I'm finding it hard to not hit an adjacent string while holding down a string - I'll figure it out 😛.

Notice the e+, b+, etc? ...Does this signify a different tuning (ex: half step up?)

dream on was very easy to learn for me. i've got an epiphone hollowbody 🙂 word been playing for a couple years now... you should really start out with scales and chords like everyone else says, but no one listens. play what you listen to then pick up scales/chords once you get bored, please. don't be a poser! 🙂

Scales and chords got boring, I did them in piano. Becuase I've done piano for a few years I could tune my guitar by ear 😛, then I picked up my tuner and I realized that my A was closer to a B flat.

To those of you who said I looked possessed, how's this?

Some people notate that as being tuned up one half step. I don't recall that song using any special tunings though, so it might not mean anything.

Awesome - thanks. Although when I try to "play along" with the song it sounds a bit discordant, but some chords sound harmonic, so I think I should be cool.

A bolt on neck does not require anymore care than a glue in or through the body. Placing against the wall is cool if you use some common sense like not placing it with too much angle against the headstock.

Bolt on necks are subject to movement and bowing due to loosening of the bolt(s). They need to be babied and adjusted at least one a year. This information comes directly from the owner of one of the largest guitar shops in Ohio.

Warp age in the neck come from changes in humidity, string tension and improper adjustment of the truss rod. If your neck bolts are tight they are not going anywhere. Jake Roman owns the largest guitar shop in the world and he surely is not the definitive word on guitar construction or repair even though he thinks he is. Check out Dan Erlewine repair guides for more info on the subject.

Probably doesn't mean anything... if it does, just play a fret up or use a capo lol
