Me and a couple buddies snagged a couple pieces of plywood to complete a table we were
building. A policeman saw it on the top of the car and pulled us over. After making us put them back at the construction site, he wrote us a citation for larceny. This includes a mandatory court date but the cop did not mention a fine. Is this something I should get an
attorney for, or should I just show up to court myself.

oh and i'm ready for the flamefest, but for those of you who have opinions, don't be discouraged by the thousands of flame posts!

I'm assuming if you're going to court, it's to determine what the fine may be, or if it'll be stiffer that a fine, like community service.

Fixed that for ya.

And yeah, get an attorney, or at least talk to one.

Don't you know your ten commandments? Thou shalt not steal.

I think the eleventh is Thou shalt not get caught.

I seriously don't see much of a problem there...tell them you didn't know they were part of the construction site, that they were half in the sidewalk/alley or something, and that you're very sorry. Worst that can happen is a fine or a lecture in front of a courtroom of people.

Lying will bring out the wrath of the judge. Please ignore this advice.

We used to steal cinder blocks to make makeshift tables and shelves from a construction site all the time, we later learned the construction was for a childrens hospital and they couldn't complete the project because they were missing too many cinder blocks. :(

Lawyer? No. You did a stupid thing, but it would be more stupid to spend money on an attorney who will not even help. You are obviosly guilty dude. Don't worry, you won't go to jail.

Who's lying? They didn't sneak in and sneak home, they picked them up, put them on the top of his car, and drove away, very obviously doing it. Telling the judge that you were unaware they were the property of the construction site isn't a huge stretch, especially if they were laying loose and not locked up behind a gate or in a building.

Bringing a lawyer to a courtdate for something so small will not make the judge happy though. Instant admission of guilt having a lawyer show up to defend you. Simply owe up to it, apologize, and take your licks.

Actually, relatively speaking it IS pretty expensive. It used to be much cheaper and I still think it costs too much right now.
