So every few months there's a computer trade show at the convention center here in town and most of the time they're waste, but every once awhile they'll be worthwhile so I go. Anyways, whenever you enter they always have these raffle forms and stuff to fill out.

So tonight I get a call saying I won a vacation for 2 from said raffle for an 7-8 day vacation to Orlando for like 5 days and then a cruise to the Bahamas for a couple days. At first I'm stoked. I'm thinking, badass, free vacation to the beach and I never win stuff. So she's telling me all the great stuff, details, etc.

Then she says that she needs a major credit card so she can charge me $299 a person to "secure my tickets and reservation". As soon as she said that I said wait a minute and had her explain it to me again.

So I asked her that I wasn't comfortable just handing her my CC#. She explained how they've been around for years, reputable, they'll have an audio recording of the transaction and that my CC company will get it to insure that it isn't fraud. I also asked her for her company info so I could look into it and a number I could call her back at. She said no, she was at a call center and could only call out.

Finally she said she could probably call me back tomorrow, however, she may not have any free vacations left. So I said, ok, call me back tomorrow after I've looked into it and then we'll see.

So, you guys think this is legit? I'm pretty sure it is since I did enter the drawing/raffle at the convention and she said that's how I won, but I don't know.

Anyone that's won something like this before, did you have to pay to secure your prize?

Lastly, assuming this is legit, is me paying $600 worth it for 5 days in hotel in Orlando and then a 2 days, 2 night cruise?

Umm if you have to pay anything it's a scam. Gee what ever happened to common sense.

Haha, easy. I've never won anything before, I don't know how this stuff works. She put forth some convincing reasons as to why it isn't a scam, but being a former salesman, it sounded too convincing and it raised my BS flag, which is why I have consulted the infinite wisdom of ATOT.

My girlfriend fell for that once, I cut her off when she started giving them her credit card number. And she says I have no common sense!

What was the name of the company?

Congratulations you won a $5000 shopping spree! Just pay me $5000 and the shopping spree is yours!

Come on man, you shouldn't have to ask this question :)

Scam!

They might have just bought the mailing list for the trade show, or the scam might be being sold by the trade show people themselves. But it's most definitely a scam since they want you to give your CC.

Aside from straight CC fraud, the scam might be one or more of:
* a worthless trip that requires going to a timeshare condo sales presentation
* a $600 package where it turns out your "deposit" is non-refundable or requires some rebate-like process where they deny the rebate for not fulfilling all requirements
* a $600 down payment on a package being sold by a travel agency where you get much less than you thought you'd get from the phone description and the rest of the package costs hundreds more.

So you can add at least $500 in tax to the $600 they're charging you, and when you consider that the vacation is probably not worth nearly $2500, it doesn't sound so good. :)

$2500 value? htf much are rooms in Orlando? You've gotta pay $600 to secure this trip... Assuming 8 days, 7 nights, that's around $86 a night. Of course, the cruise portion will be slightly more, but those start at around $100 per night... (quick googling) So, 2 nights on cruise for 2 people = $400, which decreases the per night cost of the hotel significantly.
Does the $2500 include all meals? etc.?
