I'm very upset...

First I guess its important to state I had a ATI 9600 PRO, and I must admit I was* more then very happy with it. It was my first ATI video card, coming from another NVIDIA GF3. One of the main reasons I originally switched to ATI was to improve my graphics, but also because the NVIDIA would give me problems in certain games with freezing. One I went to the ATI, for nearly 1 year the card worked flawless playing all games with no problem, never even had one freezing or other type problem.

Recently the upgrade bug came again, I wanted something bigger. I consider the ATI 9800 pro, but I felt I want a bit more power. ATI unfortunately doesn't have anything in the middle from the 9800 pro the x800, but the BFG 6800 OC felt like a nice middle ground for $250. Well I got the 6800 OC and I could get it to install, but what do you know? I soon realized again how crappy all these drivers are for NVIDIA. NHL 2005, Max Payne where crashing, or where causing some weird video static that caused lines in the image. I've installed 3-4 different version Den 4 drivers, to no prevail. The only game that works fine is doom (go figure). And even in windows my mouse will freeze for 2-3 seconds every 10-15 minutes.

In any event, I don't expect to be paying $250 for a video card and only have 1-2 games work. I honestly fiqured NVIDIA has grown up from nearly 2 years ago, but it clearly shows me ATI is the better company. While there isn't a card in the same price range or as powerful as the 6800, I'm now ready to just get a 9800 PRO (save $70) and use it until ATI releases a 6800 competitor.

This is certainly the last time, I purchase an NVIDIA card.

Who wants to lay money down on wether stonep uninstalled his radeon's drivers before doing the swap?

I will, that was the first thing I did...

Are you willing to try a clean install of Windows XP? Might actually help. Also did you update the motherboard drivers?

Fair enough. It's just that usually when people come in here and do a big irrational rant like that, they missed the most obvious cause for their troubles.

Hey stonep I'm sorry about your bad experience with your 6800. When you said you tried "3-4 different version Den 4 drivers", are you talking about the "Dentonator" drivers? If so, have you tried installing the official 61.77 ForceWare drivers from NVidia's site?

Mmake sure you FULLY clean out ATI's drivers by uninstalling them first, then using a driver cleaner for ATI drivers or something. Also, you'll probably want to get something like "Detonator R.I.P." to fully uninstall the Detonator drivers also, then start off on a clean state with the ForceWare drivers. You'll find these utilities over at http://downloads.guru3d.com/

But yeah, switching graphics cards from different companies have always been a pain in the @$$...a lot of people go as far as reformatting lol. But really, the 6800 series are really great cards, please try the steps above before you give up. Good luck!

I, on the other hand, have never had anything but bliss with Nvidia cards and steadfastly refuse to purchase anything with an ATi chipset for the exact reasons you mention, stonep, because of their poor driver quality. It takes all kinds I suppose.

Use Driver Cleaner (and Cab Cleaner) and get rid of every shred of ATI and Nvidia software then install the 61.77 ForceWare drivers from Nvidia. I haven't had anything close to major issues with Nvidia's drivers.

Yeah last time i checked if you are using the Det 4 drivers it s not gonna support the newer cards lol!

Not a prob with hardware or drivers dude... dont mean to be mean but it is most definatley a user problem. Try a clean install use driver cleaner and get the 66.81's from guru3d and youll be set!

Good Luck,

-Kevin

sorry to hear about the problems. it may be something with your system configuration. however, life is about being happy, so do what you can to be happy even if it means replacing it. you might have had the same problems with an ATI card, as these are probably the kinds of problems people have had when they say the same thing about ATI cards.

I'd do a fresh install, b/c that card is most likely not the problem and nv's drivers are usually good. It's usually an issue with switching between the two brands. The other cleaning programs may also help, but I keep WinXP on it's own small partition for exactly this reason.

Also make sure the heat sink and fan on the video card is functioning. There has been a few freak occurrences of when the sticker on the unit actually melted into the fan.

But from your continuing problems from the past, it sounds like Windows XP needs to be freshened up a bit. I make it a habit to reinstall windows once a year, if not twice from a major upgrade.

Use others advice, Use Driver Cleaner. Or make sure you use Windows own control panel to completly uninstall the drivers from the ATI card. You might also need to search through your registry to prune out any ATI keys.

This falls into the top 10 piles of crap I have read in this forum. When properly installed, a 6800 would make it seem like you never had a video card in your system before.

I've actually had the same problems which this guy has mentioned. The problems are ongoing as well. I tried reformatting to no avail. I've also tried several driver versions (while uninstalling the previous drivers) and this hasn't helped as well.

And your motherboard AGP/chipset drivers?

i've yet to ever have to do a fresh install to install a different type of card. frankly, the worst exp. i had was going from a 9800p to the x800pro, but was still able to do so w/o reinstall.

at any rate, it's quite possible the nv drivers have issues with his specific games, just as ati cards have issues with certain games (over 2 yrs and you sacrifice still won't run right). neither side is perfect, and issues can be found for both with specific games.

update*

I took some advise from everyone here,

I used both the ATI & NVIDIA Driver Removal Tools.... While I did remove the drivers manually, obviously these tools help to remove lingering files, conflicts in the registry, ect.

In any event, I did that and also installed thew new "61.77 ForceWare drivers from Nvidia". So far with some limited testing 2 of the games are now working, I won't say its 100% fixed although theres some of an improvement. Tomorrow I will be testing even more and will have a final answer...

Maybe this turn out to be the nice $250 card I was hoping for to fill a gap...

We shall see
