Just got a 360.

It gets really hot in the area if I have the front doors of the center closed. Is that okay? Should I leave the front doors of the entertainment center open?

Thanks 🙂

Leave it open when it's on, also make sure the bottom(when stood up vertically) of the 360 is clear. That's where the fans are to draw in air.

I'd go with the one on the right... I keep mine standing on end simply because I've read a number of times that they cool a lot better that way. Whether or not that is true or myth, I can't say... but that is what I've heard so that's what I've gone with. The newer xbox360's have had a much reduced rate of failure so you're probably ok with either one, as long as there is good circulation in the enclosure... and I would definitely keep the doors open when it's turned on.... If I were to choose between one configuration or the other I'd go with the one on the right with the Xbox standing upright.

I've heard the opposite - that the 360 is better ventilated when placed horizontally.

For the OP: 65.85% of ATCG users polled keep theirs horizontal. Poll

Yeah I heard the opposite as well. There are air intakes on the side of the unit that you cover up when you stand it on end I believe.

Make sure the power brick is laying flat and has room as it too has a fan in it and can overheat as well.

Just to be safe I'd keep it as far from other electronics that generate heat when it's on. I don't have have an enclosed entertainment center, but I do have a big glass/steel 3 level TV stand. The 360 is on the bottom level with about 8 inches between it and my receiver. It's open on 3(1/2) sides and I've never had an overheating problem. Make sure you open the doors whenever you use it, or (even better) put it outside the entertainment center.

That said, why not just ditch the original Xbox (or at least move it) since "most" games will work on the 360?

This is what the compartment looks like. I can have it set up one of these two ways. There is a decent amount of room behind the consoles. Which configuration would be best for the health of the console?

Although I don't like putting consoles on top of other consoles, the each exposed vent needs at least 4 inches of room. It looks like the layout on the left would do that.

And keep the doors open when it's on.

I'd probably find a way to either take the doors off or find another place to put the 360. I had my 360 and stereo receiver in a large/spacious entertainment cabinet with glass doors. I eventually took the glass doors off because I got worried about the heat from the 360 and the receiver. It got real hot in there just with the 360 running. It was ridiculous when both were on.

It isn't going to sit on top of the other Xbox well either.

I could probably just take the Xbox out actually, we never use it. Would the recommendation be to have the Xbox taken out and the 360 placed horizontally? I notice that the part of the 360 that is on the bottom when laid out horizontally gets really hot. I will keep my glass doors of my entertainment center open during use since that seems to be the recommendation.

Does the fan run all the time or only when the 360 is on?

I have a entertainment center in the bedroom and was planning to put a 360 in there. The door would be open when I was using the 360, but I was planning to put the power brick on a shelf in the entertainment center instead of behind it on the carpet.

The machine runs MUCH cooler with it alone in the enclosure with the doors open(of course). I have the power brick placed behind my TV on the stand, so it doesn't have to be on the carpet.

It runs for a little while after the 360 switches off I believe. I can't really tell though.

I keep mine in our entertainment center, with my receiver on the shelf below it, and the DishNetwork receiver on shelf above it.

I do have an Intercooler on it, though.

I lay mine flat after my first console RROD's (RIP, oh faithful one!).

I had read in random perusing while I was waiting for my repair that one of the causes for 360 failures was standing them up on end - as the mobo heated, the weight of the heatsink would warp the mainboard. *Shrug*

I guess it makes sense?
