wow! how much per gallon? i think we have used maybe $800 this winter and we still have maybr 300 gallons.

It varies by delivery.

Has been anywhere from $1.83 to $2.69 a gallon.

500 gallon tank

Should note we went 8 days without electricy from an ice storm in January.

Only heat was from the stove.

Got me a new house with that new Owens Corning house wrap and a 90% furnace. $130 at a comfy 68F for me in a 2400sq ft house. Our old house was 1300sq ft and we used to get $300-$400 bills in the winter on a regular basis.

thats nothing compared to our 3 month £1100 gas bill because they applied a imperial to metric conversion to a metric reading.

Did your pipes freeze because you had no heat? Below freezing is nothing and should not cause your pipes to freeze. Hell, we'll go the whole month of Jan and never get above zero never mind freezing. 32 is a day at the beach.

well it happened again:

Ok. Back in Feb I got an insane bill, I thought, fair enough I used that much.

Now... April comes along. And they are saying i used the same amount!!! $275 from March. 16 to April 16.

My place is a 15x13 efficiency. They are closed today, but seriously something is amiss here. I can take the fact that between Jan 16 and Feb 16th I used that much, but I KNOW I barely had my heat on in the last month let alone $275 worth.

What do I say? Could there be a leak? What if there isn't, do I just take it?

My worst this winter was $223. It has been cold this month though, so it could be quite high as well, but I hope it's close to $100. Last year it peaked at around $310.

Although it is expensive to live in CA, I do appreciate our low gas bills.

We have gas heat/cooking/water/dryer but my gas bill has never hit $40 thanks to rarely needing to use the heater.

I'm renting a house right now and didn't know how bad a gas bill was until after I moved in. After putting over $600 in the tank in Feburary (I actually ran out of gas. Heat set on 68.) I turned the heat down. Its been cold, but at least now with spring I don't need the heat anymore. Its a brand new furnace, so I'm not sure if thats why it used so much. The water heater hardly uses any gas at all.

Well, due to thermal exapansion, apparently your apartment increased in area by 25%. That would, of course, require an increase in the amount of energy required to keep it warm. :p

About the gas leak - no, there's not a gas leak. You'd know it by now. (Or rather, the people 3 doors away, next to the empty lot, would remember the big explosion.)

You still haven't replied to what several suggested above: does your bill say "actual reading" or does it say "estimated"? Most likely, one of the months was estimated, and the other was actual, hence they had to catch up. However, given the size(s) of your apartment, that does seem abnormally high - so which is it? 40 year old furnace? Or no insulation?

Do you share the utility bill with other people in the building? I've lived in units like that and it sucks when someone else jacks up their heat whilst leaving the windows open.

Are you allowed to ask for a meter dude to come buy and get a more accurate reading each month?
