The shop I worked in for 6 years was broken into and had 6 Cannondales, 3 Treks, a Litespeed, a Santana tandem, and a Klein taken in quick work. Our tape caught the whole thing......three thugs backed up a van, guy hops out the rear with a piece of concrete, breaks out the left front plate glass window, they climb in and begin handing out bikes like they knew their job.

We figured they'd been in checking out the place while "shopping" for bikes. Sucked big time. alarm did go off, but took police a couple of minutes to get there and they'd been in and out FAST.

Our solution was ugly, but effective........heavy-duty chain link fence bolted to the inside of the display window frames. This took on another set of wanna-be thieves........they made so much noise trying to cut the fencing out that the cops actually caught them.

Maybe this would work for you, too.

Get a Claymore and camp out with it. And you can use your judgment as to which claymore to use... either the mine or the sword will work. One will get no blood on you but create a lot of mess to clean-up, the other will be less messy overall but you run the risk of getting massive bloodstains on your clothes.

The bikes were supposed to have been cabled together. Apparently it didn't get done that night. :disgust:

I'm going to push the owner to spring for some chain link and cover the windows with it. I even mentioned to her today that that might be a good route to go. One of the customers that does steel work and owes us money for bike was supposed to have come and put steel bars over the windows. THIS was two break ins ago, and STILL it hasn't been done. So his flakiness has cost us again.

The key is actually not a bad idea either, I'll mention that to her in the morning, thanks for the idea!

Idea: Think LASERS for an alarm system.
As shown in the movie "Mission Impossible", when the Tom Cruise character stole the "NOC Disk", after climbing out of the air-conditioning duct.
Or, as shown in the movie "Hackers".
Is there a possible roof entry? Maybe the thief will get stuck in the air vent, and have to be extricated by the fire department.
Maybe the owner could sub-lease to some Vietnamese dry cleaner business/Chinese take-out food, and relocate the bike shop to a better location.

This makes 3 time in as many months.

The douche bags tried to get in through the front door glass last weekend but couldn't (we put in bullet proof glass, it broke, but not enough for them to get through. But of course it had to be replaced) so they came back last night and broke out the front plate glass window.

The good news is there WAS some blood. The bad news was there wasn't nearly as much as I would have liked. Like a 6 foot PUDDLE! :| Once again the alarm failed to go off too. So tomorrow I shop for a better solution to the crap system we have NOW!

Two guys are camping out in the shop tonight. (Though I'm SURE they won't be back so soon)

And I very well may start camping there on the weekends, along with Brutus and my 9MM.

I'm REALLY sick of this sh!t.

Unfortunately using deadly force in a business brake in would no doubt send me straight to the joint.
And NOT the kinda joint I enjoy.

I say you camp out with a shotgun. If they are armed, kill them!

this worker said he recovered a high-end F/S bike at a skatepark? I don't think so! Let me guess... it was his turn to cable all the bikes together that night?

1. silent alarm with glass-break sensor and several motion alarms anywhere there is a point of entry - not cheap, but cheaper than new plate glass windows every month.

2. wireless cameras (yes, plural) monitoring all access points.

3. remote monitoring of alarm and cameras from home.

4. when 1, 2, and 3 are ready, sit at home waiting for alarm to go off. calmly drive down to shop, shoot robbers with non-lethal bullets, hog tie, and wait for police. or lock thieves in torture chamber in back until they agree to work for you in recovering your stolen property and working off all expenses incurred in theivery.

/mostly joking about 4, but dead serious about 1, 2, and 3...
//good luck

too bad ur not in the NY area, i could come by and help you out.

i install cctv systems. you'd be a perfect candidate for a DVR system with web capabilities. Sit on your couch and watch the store from your laptop or PC.

sorry to hear (again), really sucks 🙁

as most people here said, set up a camera here, hopefully you'll be able to catch them in the act. Do you have a pic of the storefront? is it possible to put one of those pull down metal bar things over it at night?

UP DATE:

We weren't broken into again last night! 🙂

I spent all day putting up heavy wire mesh screen over the inside of the windows. I'm going to do the doors as well. I also bought a pair of motion activated flood lights, though I haven't wired them up yet. Plus I'm still pushing for a better alarm system. If we got one that set off a pager or something, I could catch the bastards. It only takes me about 3 minutes to get there on my bike. 🙂

I like the key idea. Do something like put paint on the door lock before you lock up and if the key is used that night it might get some on it... or wait behind the door with a shotgun. either way.

Yeah, I thought about the key thing and it's probably not a good idea. There is LOTS of little stuff that could be taken that may not be missed right away. And by the time it IS missed, how do we know when or how it was lifted?

Take off the basket and horn and replace the banana seat and you could get that down to 2 minutes.

Sorry to hear about the thefts.

Here's a suggestion in addition to any monitoring changes you may make:
Get a long steel cable (or several) - and thread it through all the frames of the bikes at night, and lock the ends together. It wouldn't take more than 5 or 10 minutes at night and in the morning again to remove it. But, it would at least slow down the criminals - or act as enough of a deterrent to make them look elsewhere. Plus, it's a cheap solution.

if they're SMART thieves, a good bolt cutter or just a handheld grinder will go through that stuff like butter.

If I was a thief, I'd carry a grinder to every gig. Goes through any type of metal easy, and most stores have readily accessible outlets...

Why don't you guys just fire the guy?

Sounds like a lawsuit if they don't have proof.

Do you still have this guy working for you? If you pay him severance you can get rid of him at any time. So what if you have to pay him out for 2 weeks, it might be worth it in the long run, and you don't have to worry that it might not have been him, b/c you've taken care of him until he finds a new place.

SO far they have all been smash and dash, so I doubt they will change their M.O. now. This will at least slow them down.

If it IS him, why would that stop him?
If anything, it would just make him more broke and more desperate.

you do ride, sorry. Biking rocks.

Second .. .

fire him because he's stealing.

Third . . .

I like the idea about electrifying the display models.more cameras, more guns. new security.
